Hi,
I'm going to buy a new machine, and I've got a problem to decide wich motherboard to select.

a) asus p5b
there's a lot of threads about that jmicron controller on the board and it seams that you still have to use experimentel kernel (like mm) to get ide-drives working. I indeed fear having nothing but trouble with that.
b) asus p5n 32 sli
well i couldn't find a lot of information about this board. it's got an nforce4 chipset. Is there somebody using this board, Are there problems with it?

Just in case it does matter:
the machine I like to build will be
Intel core2duo E6600
2 x SATA Harddrive
1 x IDE DVD burner

Thanks for your answers

A Intel based mainboard should be better for the Core2Duo.
You can also buy a 975X based mainboard for this processor. This chipset supports directly a PATA port.

like Keruskerfuerst wrote, I would also recommend the use of a 975X based mainboard

I use the P5W DH Deluxe, it costs a little more than the others, but it has good overclocking potential,
lots of ports (no parallel   ), wlan, ...

there also exist some real tricky problems with the JMicron-controller:
you can't boot off an ATAPI-Drive on the JMB361, whereas off the JMB363 you can
(hope that matches the truth)

-> this should be the ideal candidate for you

your two SATA-Harddrives can then be connected to:
- the SiliconImage Hardware-Raid (no drivers needed !), working fine here
- the Intel ICH7R (with Intel Matrix Raid / or Linux raid drivers), should do fine, too
- JMicron -> which could make trouble

the IDE DVD-Burner should run perfectly when attached to the IDE/ATA-Port of the Intel ICH7R

that board should also do fine with official Gentoo LiveCD 2006.1 release

anyone who has experience with Intel Matrix raid on that board + Official Gentoo LiveCD please confirm!

thanks in advance
