Hi
I am having a problem with my newly installed Gentoo.
The network worked fine during the install but when I booted up for the first time the network fails with the following message.
Failed to bring eth0 up
Error: Problem starting needed services
"Netmount" was not started
I read on the forum that a commmon cause of networks not starting at first boot is when you don't have /boot mounted when copying the newly compiled kernel to /boot - I have since compiled a new kernel and copied it making sure that /boot was mounted but still no joy. I compiled the new kernel with network support including support for my NIC.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this? All help greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Mark. |

That happened to me yesterday and a few people helped with this when I posted here. So I'm gonna try to help you.
Do you have net access when you boot from the CD? If so, there's a good chance you need to load a module specific to your network card.
- Boot from the CD. Type 'lsmod'. That will show you which modules are loaded in the kernel used by the CD. If you can connect to the internet, it means the CD has a good config, right? So, read 'lsmod' output and try to find the module of your network card. Since I don't know which one it is, I can't help you there.
- Now, boot normally and go into the kernel config ('/usr/src/linux/make menuconfig'). Under "Network devices->Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit)", try to find the module used by your network card. Toggle it by typing 'y'.
- Recompile the kernel, now it should work. You could also add the module name to /etc/modules.autoload but that wasn't necessary for me.

Anyway, maybe just post your network card specs and maybe someone will be able to tell you exactly which module to load. |

Hi Senso
Many thanks for your reply, it turned out that I had compiled the wrong NIC module into my kernel.
I followed your instruction & booted from cd, then did lsmod which showed 3c59x as loaded, but I couldn't see that in the menuconfig, I used 3c900 module & this worked. NIC is 3c905b
