I would personally go with an NVIDIA chipset. Everything seems to be pretty well supported. Usually Intel mobos are pretty okay, but they often will use different third party SATA, LAN, etc... to make the mobo cheaper. I've had many problems with the 3rd party parts.

I have an Abit AB9 (not Pro)
and everything is working (even 64-bit! but I don't know about the soundcard because I use Sb Live )
It was a bit messy to setup though.
But with help from this forum it shouldn't be too difficult.
I would raise some question about the health of the SATA-driver though...

You should really get an opinion from someone with nvidia-chipset , I have never
ever faced a computer that was so hard to install. Not even my centrino-laptop 3 years ago...
Even though everyting works , the readiness of the drivers can be questioned.

Don't get a DG965SS board, it's supported but the only by the most recent kernels, and you have to use an experimental CD installer to get it up and running, and it is really a pain in the ass (actually the PATA driver is the problem, if you are a lucky one who have a SATA CD drive and use only SATA HD, you will not have any problems), I lost 2 days to get my system working with this board.

I read somewhere yhat the Chinese govt.requires all computer
and hardware manufacterers to design their stuff so Linux will
run on it.
Afaik Taiwan is following this rule.

I didn't saw much difference between those two on intel's website, they basically have different onboard video, and the SS type is better (X3000 versus 3000), so probably you would have the same problem that a had to install linux distros on it. :?
