Hello fellow Gentooists.

I have a Pioner DVR-110 DVD-RW Drive, it has been working fantastically with 2.6.17 using libata's support for PATA on Intel ICH chipsets using the piixn libata driver. However I recently moved to 2.6.18-gentoo-r4 using the same kernel config it now does not detect it properly and udev does not create a device.

The hard disk attached to the sata port on the Piix work great, but the DVD-RW seems to be timing out, well thats what it looks like to me.

Does anyone know what causes this and how to remedy it ? Any help is most appreciated.

The dmesg output is:

No idea how the libata driver supports pata (I thought it didn't)

Maybe try forcing the DVD drive to use a slower rate rate (33 Mhz) -- 66 might be too high.

Are you using a 80 pin cable for the DVD?

What does hdparm -I /dev/[drive giving problems] say in older kernel?

Thanks Mikers, I have discovered that the issue is a bug in the libata pata support handling in 2.6.18/19 and that they are working on it now! Hopefully they fix it soon.

For now I am going to roll back to 2.6.17

I seem to have a simialr problem. I was runing 2.6.17 or 2.6.18 dont remember exaktly. I have built a software raid5 server whit gentoo. Seemd to work. But I uppgraded to 2.619 becus of the hotplug support. That works. i have hotswap bays for my sata disks. But I get similar errors like you and the raid aray always kicks out my tird disk, sdd1 whit similar error mesages. So I have to do a recovery of the aray. I will try 2.6.17 and see if that work. i cant hotswap the disks then what I knwo but can live whit that until a fix coms in a new kernel.
The disk passes DFT test program thet do extensiv testing of the disk and no HW failure on the electronics or hardware os sectors on the disk that it can detect and S.M.A.R.T status is good.

2.6.17 failed to compile on my alpha machine so I downloaded 2.6.20-rc1. haven't had any problems so fare. uploaded about 22Gb none stop to it whit out any problems. I use a sil3124 PCI X controller. my radi 5 aray hade a read speed of about 35Mb/sec or so in hdparm but now its up to 57-46Mb/sec :D

Dont know if that only was a performance boos on this controller or something that will help any controller or raid array.

Wort trying!
