Hi,
I have a Gentoo 1.2 i586 system installed now and upto date - did it all with a 56k modem! On wednesday I have the opprtunity to sit down infront of a 100Mb/s connected box and thought of grabbing the stage3-i586-1.3b.tbz2 tarball. My question is, can I untar this on top of my current system (or a copy of it) and go ahead... with what ever now is needed to make it work or? Any special considerations?
Thought this was a nice chance to bring me upfront without feeding the phone company once again
Thanks.

I wouldn't just untar it on top of your system - that would most likely be a BadThing (tm), because all of your apps compiled with gcc-2.95 might not work. Why not just grab all the gcc-3 packages and update? |

Yes I figure it all will have to be recompiled... but,

a more formal "upgrade" would of cause be slim.
Can I do this by untar on an other box and pull/emerge them from there or? Sorry but I'm rather new to Portage... I guess the exact answer is floating around somewere but my head is full after reading plenty of docs and forum posts... so some guiding on the way would be appreciated
Thanks for the rapid answer btw,

If you're looking for slim, just back up everything you need to a tarball and store it away safely, and then reinstall. Just untarring a stage-3 iso won't help - it will overwrite your glibc, gcc, binutils... probably not good. If you don't want to rebuild your system from the ground up (I did and am happy I did so), there are other threads on this forum about slowly migrating - just be sure to get the latest and greatest base system requirements. |

Guess I like to rebuild from ground, but not emerging everything through a 56k modem again (took me 2½ day!), but making use of the 1.3b stage3 iso, but what from I can see it's not an iso but a tarball of files or am I wrong? If it's an iso I can just burn, boot and reinstall. But if not I just want to be sure doing it the right way
I have a small LAN with 3 boxes of which one serve as a ppp gateway with dns, samba and www, one is win2000 and one is Win/Linux depending which HD I plug in (mainly for testing and for my son to hammer on) - if this can be usefull info?
I'm not new to Linux, but only used SuSE so far and bound to use my win2000 box daily for work purposes. So even if I try to steadily improve my Linux fundamentals, especially now with Gentoo, I'm a bit unsure about things when it comes to critical tasks. _________________ /Joakim

The stage 3 tarball is just that - a tarred, compressed file system image. You can use your 1.2 ISO - just untar the new stage3 and begin emerging all of your applications. You'll probably want to reformat, or maybe delete everything except for your /home. |
