pcmcia nic not working in gentoo

This is driving me crazy. Card is a Dlink DWA-642. Atheros chip. Madwifi doesn't support it yet. Card works a treat in Ubuntu using ndiswrapper.

I have pcmciautils, pcmcia-cs-cis, pcmcia installed. lsmod shows proper kernel modules are loaded. lspci indicates that the cardmgr picked up that the card is there. ndiswrapper installed the driver with no problems.

Obviously, I am doing something wrong. I just can't figure out what. Anybody got any ideas ?
