I hope someone takes this seriously. Right now, the major thing missing from the forum is a software forum. All Things Gentoo mainly covers people having problems with Gentoo. The Desktop forum is obviously for KDE, Gnome, etc. Now what we really need is a place to talk about OpenOffice, AbiWord, ssh, cvs, vim, and all the other great software apps out there that are available for Linux.
Please! |

We have too many forums as-is. OpenOffice and AbiWord get shoved into the Desktop Environment forum (whose description should be expanded), ssh goes in Networking, cvs goes in Programming, and vim can go in General Linux.

Desktop Environments should be strictly for WMs, IMO. That's what it's primarly used for anyway. Where does Mozilla go? Where does xmms go? Where does gkrellm go? Where does xchat go? Applications deserve their own forum.
If you think there's too many forums, combine all those useless Hardware forums into one. Why is Laptops separate?
In addition, All Things Gentoo should be defined better. It's an "I have a problem" forum as it stands right now. |

There is always "General Linux", where you can stick pretty much anything.
As far as why Laptops is separate, that's because there are developers that work on getting Gentoo to work nicely with laptops, and it makes matters easier to keep all laptop issues in one place.
As far as All Things Gentoo goes, right, it is a general "I have a problem" forum. That's not necessarily a good thing (and a large number of posts are moved out of it on a daily basis), but it's a starting place...
Anyway, the arrangement of forums is still being discussed. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

Either way, Gentoo still has the best forums out of any Linux distribution on the Net. Here's to hoping you guys come up with a logical solution that addresses the needs of the majority. |

Maintaining the proper balance between having things organized properly and *not* having 23,000 forums is a delicate act. IMO, right now we have too many forums and I'm more inclined to consolidate them rather than add new ones. ATG still gets way too many posts and some of the other forums don't get enough.
So, while I'm not sure that a "linux software" forum is the right answer, forum reorg is something that is being actively discussed.

--kurt | I still maintain that ATG should be renamed and dropped towards the bottom
of the General Help section. More of a 'last resort' my topic doesn't fit elsewhere
forum, and I didn't see it first, so I didn't post there. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Consolidate the hardware forums, get rid of the Newbie forum, get rid of the General Linux forum, and give me my software forum. My 2 cents. |

I can assure you that will not happen.

Which hardware forums, exactly?
