I emerged the ati drivers and for some reason whenever I go to modprobe fglrx I get the following error message
Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r5/video/fglrx.o will taint the kernel: non-GPL license - Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg, GERMANY
See http://www.tux.org/lkml/#export-tainted for information about tainted modules
/lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r5/video/fglrx.o: init_module: Operation not permitted
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r5/video/fglrx.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r5/video/fglrx.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r5/video/fglrx.o: insmod fglrx failed
I don't really have a clue about what to do, could someone suggest something? |

mm okay.. a couple of starter hints while we wait for someone who knows more abt ati cards to come and help
1. make sure you're root. a stupid thing i know. but just make sure.
2. it gonna be very hard to see what exactly is causing the problems without more info. so,. like it says... run dmesg and post it. there may be clashes that can be helped.
3. did u install the driver after an major update/kernel recompile? try reinstalling the drivers. also try the drivers from the website as opposed to portage. you never know
good luck |

I was sure to run that in root, also I would download the drivers off the website but they are in *.rpm which I don't currently have support for nor do I want support for. Could you possibly suggest another alternative?
Do you want my full dmseg or just something with some kind of conflict. |

I too am having this same problem on my Thinkpad laptop. Dmesg reports:
[fglrx] Maximum main memory to use for locked dma buffers: 552 MBytes.
[fglrx:firegl_init] *ERROR* Device not found!
[fglrx] Maximum main memory to use for locked dma buffers: 552 MBytes.
[fglrx:firegl_init] *ERROR* Device not found!
I have a Radeon Mobility in this laptop and would love to have 3D accelleration. Any ideas? Is ati-drivers the end-all/be-all for ATI accelerated graphics?
Edit:
Under Character Devices in the kernel config I've had the Radeon enabled on the kernel level. I've also tried it with Radeon support disabled, but get the same results... _________________ only the paranoid survive |

I don't think the ati-drivers support the mobility radeon, unless it's the mobility radeon 9000 or up. I think it's for chipsets that are the R200 and up (Radeon 8500 onwards). The XFree DRI drivers are pretty good in Linux anyway, my mobility radeon 7500 runs great and has full DRI support. You can try the ati-gatos drivers though and they may work a little better. |

actually stustill's tutorial in the thread linked below worked like a champ. I think I do have the Radeon Mobility 7000/7500, so the performance isn't too terrific. I don't have any intensive games to test on this laptop right now, but I do average 400 fps with glxgears. Is that any good with the RM7k? I do get this error from glxgears though:
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".

I don't get that error, and I'm getting about 600fps in glxgears. I have a T30 with a 1.8GHz P4M, 256MB RAM. I'm not even sure what that error is. |

I got my ati-radeon 9000 working with the drivers now, the mod probe just some how fixed itself the only thing I can't seem to figure out is why I'm only getting 1200 FPS in glxgears, can anyone make some suggestions about increasing the performance? Most people should be getting more than 6000fps correct? |

If you do get 6000fps, let me know how you did it
P4, 2.2G, 512 MB, Radeon 9000
9123 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1824.600 FPS
9142 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1828.400 FPS
9218 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1843.600 FPS
9140 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1828.000 FPS
Rarely seeing anyone getting more then 2kfps |
