I have a server running gentoo, and a laptop with redhat on it. I am not able to get the two to even ping each other. I have no firewalls running when I try, and they are connected with crossovers.

| Why is the the network 192.168.0.0/24 on two different interfaces on the server? And I bet your laptop is plugged into port eth1 of your server. |

I have the cable plugged into eth0. It isn't eth1. I just setup eth1 so I knew the drivers were ok when I installed the machine. It is definately eth0. _________________ [LRU] |

If you take down eth1, do pings work then? |

I took eth1 down, and still everything is the same. It's really bizarre and quite annoying

OK, now I'm stumped.
I just pulled out the network cable from this machine and put it in the other port. Restarted eth0 and eth1. Low and behold, it now works!
I'm going to try the other port again now and see if maybe it was just a loose connection, or hopefully my network port is not shafted up the backend.
edit: mmmm....the port that works has an orange and green light, while the other one does not have a green light, but has an orange one. This is weird because the cable has not been touched since it was put in. Perhaps there is a driver problem? I would have though eth0 and eth1 would not load properly if there was a driver problem though? _________________ [LRU]

I spent an hour on this problem a few days ago. I wasn't amused. _________________ Where there's open source , there's a way. |
