I've got Windows XP installed as a guest in vmware-workstation-5.5.3.34685. Whenever I start the vm there's a message in the status line at the bottom saying "Your version of VMware Tools is out of date". In the menu there's an option to "Install VMware Tools..." but apart from changing its caption to "Cancel VMware Tools Install..." it does nothing, except producing a warning that the guest os must be running, which it is. Any ideas how to update VMware Tools?

No it is not. I am a little confused as to the use of vmware-workstation-tools. I don't understand if it should be installed in a gentoo guest os or as in my case the gentoo host os. I would be thankful for some light on this.

I think I was able to install WMware tools in the Windows XP guest os without ever installing vmware-workstation-tools when I first installed vmware-workstation-5.5.1, but I might be wrong.

well, emerging it shouldnt harm. its emerged here, but i am not sure if its used by the ebuild, or if i updatet it via vmware itself via the internet. however, "install vmware tools" from the menu works here. i am using the same workstation ebuid as you do. well, guest os is w2k, though i dont think that makes a difference.

vmware tools must be installed in the guest. The vmware tools in portage is for a gentoo guest. When you click on Install VMWare Tools an iso image is mounted inside the guest as the cd. Make your way to the cd drive inside the guest os and use what you find there.

@Seron

now i recall!
if you get that message you describe (vmware tools out of date), you have to upgrade this *online* from the vmware website. this will install a new version.
IIRC i got some kind of a "popup". a grey box "update now yes/no".

At some point I had autorun turned off in Windows and therefore nothing appeared on the screen when I selected "Install VMware Tools..." . But, an ISO of WMware Tools had been connected to the CD-drive. Running setup.exe from there started the installation procedure. I found this by reading this at vmware.
