I'm aware everyone hates gaim and therfore does not use it (beats me as too why but wtvr...)
but I recently forced gaimebeta6 to emerge and it doesnt support the msn protocol like 1.5 does
I used gaimbeta6 on windows and it supported gaim
If anyone uses gaim and know what the problem is please help
keep in mind I'm not going to switch to uselessy graphic other IMS with other useless features, I just want simple stupid gaim(To me at least. I don't use stuff like video chat so I don't need anything better) |

Code: | $ emerge -pv gaim
[ebuild R ] net-im/gaim-2.0.0_beta6 USE="crypt dbus gstreamer gtk nls ssl startup-notification xscreensaver -avahi -bonjour -cjk -console -custom-cflags -debug -doc -eds -gadu -gnutls -groupwise -meanwhile -mono -msn -perl -qq -sasl -silc -spell -tcl -tk" |
Notice the msn in that? I don't use it myself, but it looks like it's there |

Yes, thats because its emerge aim and not the beta6 one which for some reason doesn't have msn when you emerge it(by path) |

I've compiled gaim-2.0.0_beta6 with the msn use flag and I don't have any problems. _________________ Gentoo Hardened Linux 2.6.21 + svorak (Swedish dvorak) |

Thanks, I would have never thought to simply do
USE="msn" emerge /usr/portage/blah/blah/blah
I keep forgetting how handy Gentoo is
(merging by path is dangerous apparently but it works so whatever) |

it may work, but isn't it easier just to emerge =net-im/gaim-2.0.0_beta6?
Or better yet, go into /etc/portage/package.keywords, and add net-im/gaim ~[arch] and then go into /etc/make.conf, and add USE="msn". And then type emerge gaim.
Gentoo's configuration files are very handy when you know about them. And by adding msn to your list of USE variables in make.conf, you make sure that programs will always compile in msn support in the future without having to remember to add USE="msn" to the emerge line every time. |

Yeah I occasionally get the MSN Authentication error...I Just ignore it. MSN's messenger service isn't very good and screws up all the time, but what can you do when you want to talk with people that use that protocol? |

I just had the error pop up when my status was sent to away.
I only get this error when a certain contact of mine signs on. That particular contact is using kopete. Is it a particular contact that is causing the error for you and if so, do you know his/her client? |

I use gaim beta6 and I have a weird problem: I can neither see the away messages of my buddies nor I can set mine. I can't even find the option that is supposed to show my away message.
I've built gaim with the following use flags
Code: | - - avahi : Add avahi/Zeroconf support
- - bonjour : Enable bonjour support
- - cjk : Adds support for Multi-byte character languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean)
+ + console : Enable gaim-text
+ + crypt : Add support for encryption -- using mcrypt or gpg where applicable
- - custom-cflags : Disables stripping of "unsafe C[XX]FLAGS"
+ + dbus : Enable dbus support for anything that needs it (gpsd, gnomemeeting, etc)
- - debug : Enable extra debug codepaths, like asserts and extra output. If you want to get meaningful backtraces see http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml .
- - doc : Adds extra documentation (API, Javadoc, etc)
- - eds : Enables support for Evolution-Data-Server (EDS)
- - gadu : Enable Gadu Gadu protocol support.
- - gnutls : Adds support for net-libs/gnutls
- - groupwise : Enable Novell Groupwise protocol support.
+ + gstreamer : Adds support for media-libs/gstreamer (Streaming media)
+ + gtk : Adds support for x11-libs/gtk+ (The GIMP Toolkit)
- - meanwhile : Enable meanwhile support for Sametime protocol.
- - mono : Build Mono bindings to support dotnet type stuff
+ + msn : Enable MSN Messenger IM protocol support
+ + nls : Adds Native Language Support (using gettext - GNU locale utilities)
+ + perl : Adds support/bindings for the Perl language.
- - qq : Enable QQ protocol support.
- - sasl : Adds support for the Simple Authentication and Security Layer
- - silc : Enable SILC protocol support
+ - spell : Adds dictionary support
+ + ssl : Adds support for Secure Socket Layer connections
+ + startup-notification : Enable startup-notification support
- - tcl : Adds support the Tcl language
- - tk : Adds support for Tk GUI toolkit
- - xscreensaver : Enable X idle time support instead of gaim idle time |
Can someone help me? |
