The correct driver, ata_piix, for "00:1f.2 IDE interface: IIntel Corporation 82801EB (ICH5) SATA Controller" has been chosen by CONFIG_ATA_PIIX=y: it has been given irq 18 "ICH5-SATA: 100% native mode on irq 18" but, later on, "irq 18: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)" hasn't been picked up and has been automatically disabled "Disabling IRQ #18". Therefore your disk is unreachable.

There was a time when it could be seen and the kernel has added it to /proc/partitions.

Perhaps somebody has experience with the Intel ICH5 SATA chipset and 2.6.19-gentoo.

Aha! In Device Drivers -> -> ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support you have "Support for SATA (deprecated; conflicts with libata SATA)" selected which, as it says, conflicts with libata, which supports SATA now. Try disabling it.

What interests me about this is that you say it is a SATA drive, but it is coming up as hde. I thought all SATA drives were sdx (x being a,b,c,whatever). That, and this from your dmesg:

Code:

hde: ST3160827AS, ATA DISK drive

Are you sure it's a SATA drive? (I am probably just reading this wrong, but I figured I'd at least check)

Anyway, your immediate problem is this:

Code:

hde: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x24
hde: DMA interrupt recovery
hde: lost interrupt

I'm guessing that something about the DMA is wrong with that drive. Check to make sure that it is turned on (I think it's an hdparm command, but I don't know what it is.) I'd recommend checking the forums and google for checking that DMA is turned on for your drive.

That's only the consequence. For some reason there was an interrupt storm on IRQ18, which was given to the SATA controller, and the kernel disabled the out-of-control interrupt to prevent the machine from freezing. Since there are no more interrupts coming from the SATA controller, the driver can't receive the DMA completion interrupt, so it gets a timeout. The problem is to find the source of the stray interrupts.

It is enabled in the kernel, but it's not what is used (the libata driver would give a /dev/sdX device). The IDE-style driver is used instead:
Code:
ICH5-SATA: IDE controller at PCI slot 0000:00:1f.2
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:1f.2[A] -> GSI 18 (level, low) -> IRQ 18
ICH5-SATA: chipset revision 2
ICH5-SATA: 100% native mode on irq 18
    ide2: BM-DMA at 0xd400-0xd407, BIOS settings: hde:DMA, hdf:pio
    ide3: BM-DMA at 0xd408-0xd40f, BIOS settings: hdg:pio, hdh:pio

I don't think those old SATA drivers are maintained anymore, since all new development is done on the libata framework. So yes, disabling the old-style drivers and trying the libata driver is a good idea.
