ok well i was just wanting to try out fluxbox because ive tried out
kde (too bloated),
gnome (currently on),
xfce (didnt like  ),
fluxbox (for like 1 hour then gave up  )
openbox (didnt get past the install)

im also thinking of switching my WM in gnome to enlightenment or openbox.
once i make the switch how easy is it to remove them?
and which would you all recommend?

but my question is how do you remove gnome so that when i start up i get the console again, i guess that would also mean removing <inset gnome login manager name here> :D

thanks again, Ducky

[EDIT] i think that means id also have to remove ./xinitrc or whatever it is called, but i plan to try out fluxbox very shortly after i uninstall gnome (hopefully entirely) [EDIT]

Definitely agree on KDE I just didn't like it either. But I found Gnome not much better. I used Fluxbox for a long time and really liked it. Curently using XFCE with Beryl which is worth a look. To remove it to boot to a console you can remove it from the run level (not sure how someone else will give you the command.) You could always Ctrl->Alt->BckSpce to shut it down but I have found that often that just puts me back to the log in screen.

To remove the login manager from any runlevel:

Code:
rc-update del xdm

To star/stop/restart, you have to first do Ctrl+Alt+F1:

Code:
/etc/init.d/xdm start
/etc/init.d/xdm stop
/etc/init.d/xdm restart

ok well ive managed to remove gnome, and install fluxbox, and i know its working because i manages to get into it last night via startx. and now ive reinstalled gdm
ive removed the gnome entry from /etc/X11/Sessions i think it ws plus the gnome.desktop entry from some other place. but gdm still tries to load gnome, and breaks while trying (coz gnome now doesnt exist)

and zietbukuel, isnt that the symbol of a true hacker? i have some document laying around here with it on.

so how can i get gdm to boot into flux?

thanks again. Ducky

Why not using the official documentation?
