Is it just me or do the release notes make this look like a completely uninteresting and unexciting release? Maybe I'm missing something, but highlighting features like a new volume control and evince being able to open multiple documents in the release notes is not a good sign.

found it, not much visual changes, more under the hood with this release

This is one release I want right now!!!
The last time that occured was when I was using mandrake and 2.0 got release (and then began rpm-hell...)

really need 2.18 since there is a nasty bug with gnome and SMB on AMD64 platforms which is fixed in 2.17

FYI, Gentoo Gnome devs maintain the gnome-experimental overlay which has been tracking the 2.17.x development series. They started releasing 2.18 ebuilds today. These will become the Portage ebuilds for ~arch.

So if you can't wait for these ebuilds to reach Portage, use layman to add gnome-experimental to your overlays. But don't complain if something breaks!

for 2.16 I was one of the early guinea pigs, and I can't wait to get my laptop on 2.18

i'll wait for ~arch ebuilds atleast though, it's not THAT big of a deal for me..

yay for gnome.

the integrated desktop security seems interesting and seahorse seems like it might be fun to play with..

The ebuilds in the gnome-experimental overlay are very stable. I've been running gnome 2.17 for a couple of weeks and haven't noticed anything too serious except for evolution having some issues. The icon theme has changed for gnome 2.18, and the icons that show up on the desktop after a volume mounts look like the icons on Mac OSX. I'm not sure if it is a good thing over all, but I like the new look. HAL will probably be the biggest hangup here. There are two issues with it right now regarding which volumes show mounted, and which are supposed to be ignored. That mainly has to do with the root partition and the boot partition that many of us have. I like it and this release is more of a stablization of the code base. There is more in looks that have improved than too many new application. You might enjoy the new chess game, and the sudoku game that has been added as well as the network card setup program that has been re-included in the gnome-experimental overlay. Disks will be able to have their own mount settings with this release. This last feature is mainly because of gnome-mount being bumped to a newer version.

Does this release include working composite support for metacity? I was under the impression that this release would finally have something useable. I gave up trying to get 2.16 beautified.

I also remember reading that 2.18 was supposed to have all the cool 3d graphic effects that we get from Beryl, Compiz, and XGL neatly integrated with gnome. Is my memory faulty or did I mis-read something?

that was the 1.16 release notes, something that is 6-9month old.

yes in those plans they say they want the 3d in gnome-2.18, but no-where have i found that it is in 2.18

It feels like a lot of things has happened with gnome the last few releases, most of wich are made out of exciting new applications (beagle, deskbar-applet, tomboy etc.), libraries (cairo etc.). I suppose this release, as someone already said, focuses primarily on stability and making all theese things more mature (at least I hope that this is the case). However, I was under the impression that NetworkManager was supposed to be included in 2.18, but I guess it hasn't matured enough to be included yet. As much as I like wpa_supplicant and it's simplicity I think NetworkManager is an application that many desktop (perhaps mostly laptop) users don't want to live without. A simple intuitive interface to switch between networks is something linux has been missing for years imo. I hope NM will satisfy this need when/if it's included.

I'm looking forward to installing 2.18 when the devs are done with it, I know they're working hard on it. 2.16 has been somewhat unstable from time to time on my laptop, hopefully things will get better.

metacity still doesn't have the 3d effects enabled. The aiglx composite manager in metacity is still considered experimental.
