after doing an emerge --update world
i found all my icons had disappeared off my gnome menus and such, and wouldnt display.
i read in the bugs database that this is a libpng problem.
Does anyone know a workaround for this problem? can i somehow use the old png libs that worked previously by linking to them or something? |

This is what i have found for a quickfix workaround. Worked for me anyways.
-------------------
its a good idea to make sure gentoolkit is already installed:
emerge gentoolkit
then make sure the paths are right:
ln -s /usr/bin/qpkg /usr/sbin
then run the scripts to get a list of what you need to recompile:
/usr/portage/media-libs/libpng/files/libpng-update-libs.sh
then:
/usr/portage/media-libs/libpng/files/libpng-update-bins.sh
Write down the packages you see after each script runs.
then just emerge the packages you wrote down to recompile them with libpng.
Many thanks to all those in #gentoo on OpenProjects who helped with this fix. |

please note that you will save yourself a lot of compiling if you first emerge the libraries, then run the update-bins script and check, since that will remove all false positives from binaries that link to libraries that link to libpng.

I noticed that the old libpng.so.2 was lingering on my system. Afer a emerge unmerge libpng;emerge libpng it was gone. I believe that the old libpng was one of the problems. I have since ran through the list provided by the scripts and stuff is starting to work again.
Just to note: This did fix everything. I did have to follow the steps above with the libs and bin script. The qt stuff had to be done first. and I had to unmerge qt-2 and qt-3 and then remerge. Then from there up. |
