Anyone install Gentoo on an Apple Xserve yet?
If so, how did it go? _________________ Gentoo just Rocks! |

AFAIK the ppc kernel doesn't fully support the Xserve (yet), so until someone gets a ppc kernel hacker an Xserve we are all waiting.... |

How do you think the performance of say a dual 1Ghz g4 xserv will stand up to a dual athlon MP 2000 box? Float, disk and mem and network io? Given that the g4 is a 64bit architecture it just doesn't appear to be kicking ass in the benchmarks I've seen as I hoped it would.
Currently I'm running alphas up2000 667s & 750s (the 750s tend to suck as they were a bad batch of chips overall - they run hotter than blazes). -- Debian for now.
The apps are poorly threaded servers for an engineering application float and net io intensive. _________________ Gentoo just Rocks! |

This is not the place for this discussion, nor will I even start talking about this sort of thing, its flamebait for x86 vs. ppc wars. If you want to talk that go elsewhere please (no offence). |

Any news on this? We've just had four delivered and am really keen to get Gentoo on them to see what they can do.
With 1.2, the default boot image crashes immediately with what looks like a core dump (IANAD), and the boot-safe
seems to have a lot of trouble with the devices before finally starting the installation process, but the keyboard
doesn't work! |

no news AFAIK.. but there is a place to ask if you like, on irc.openprojects.net try asking in #mklinux (It's where the ppc kernel guys hang out) |

If anyone with an Xserve can put it on the net, and stick a RS-232 port from another box to it on the net so a certain kernel dev could get access to it, he said he'd be happy to use your box for kernel work, and you could be the first xserve in the world running PPC/Linux =)
