Hi!

I've bought an intel-based NIC and now I'm wondering which driver is better in performance, the Intel one or the one by Becker? Any suggestions?

Thanks

I have had two laptops with Intel eepro100 NICs, and in both cases the interface would "disappear" after a few minutes of activity when using the Becker driver. However, the Intel driver has been quite solid for me.

Apparently the problem with the Becker driver is known, but for some reason not fixed, as of 2.4.19. Since the Intel driver is now included in the 2.4.20 series, I just use it. Before its inclusion, I had to download the source from Intel and compile it in...kinda a pain.

Anyway, in terms of performance I don't know which is better. NIC drivers are so simple I doubt if there is much difference between the two. Use whichever you want (unless you have the same "disappearing-NIC" problem I had).

Imho yes. I have used Becker without any problems whatsoever. Allways full duplex etc etc...no hicups in performance as I have seen it with Intel. And as someone else notice...its in the kernel :=)

Depends entirely on the NIC. My notebook is much happier with the e100 than the eepro.
Code:
ronin root # lspci | grep Ethernet
01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM/CA/CAM Ethernet Controller (rev 03)
