|

I have a really odd problem when trying to switch windows with Alt-Tab. I'm running an nVida card with TwinView enabled for a dual-monitor setup. When I press Alt-Tab in KDE, however, I can only switch among the windows open on the active screen. I cannot switch to any windows open on the other monitor unless I click one of them with the mouse. At that point, Alt-Tab will only show my the windows open on that screen, but not the original screen.
This is a new install on new amd64 hardware, but I've used a similar TwinView configuration for many years now and don't recall ever having this problem before. I looked through the KDE Control Center to see if maybe there was some strange setting I had changed, but the only thing that seems applicable is the Windows Behavior section under Desktop. The Navigation group contains various options that affect Alt-Tab behavior, but none of them affect this issue.
I'm stumped (and rather frustrated). Any ideas?
Note: This is different than the "Traverse windows on all desktops" option. That affects switching between apps across virtual desktops. In my case, I only want to switch between all apps that are on the current desktop, just split across the two monitors. _________________ https://www.legroom.net/ |

Ok, so if I uncheck the "Show window list while switching windows" option, Alt-Tab will switch among all windows on both screens as it should. The problem, though, is that each window is now automatically brought into the foreground as I hold Alt and search for the correct window with Tab. I much prefer the default behavior of displaying a window list and only focusing the selected window, similar to Windows' behavior, as the auto-focus thing messes up the order of my windows.
Any ideas on this? I still haven't had any luck, other than that one option. Thanks. _________________ https://www.legroom.net/ |

Have you checked the option Carlo referred you to?

(And please remember to update the bug as well because that's what we work with mostly. :-) ) _________________ If you feel the issues discussed in this thread have been resolved, please add a "[Solved]" to the subject of your original posting. |

I sure did. I replied in the bug as well, but as I stated at the bottom of my first post of this thread the option that Carsten suggested is not part of the issue. This enables switching among windows on all virtual desktops, but I'm trying to enable just the (supposedly) default behavior of switching among all windows on the same desktop. That's what's failing - I can only switch among apps on the same physical screen, not the full desktop which consists of two monitors. _________________ https://www.legroom.net/ |

I got it working, but I'm leaving the bug report open as there's still a bug involved. Please see the bug report for details. _________________ https://www.legroom.net/ |

Adding solution per desultory's request.
See http://ktown.kde.org/~seli/xinerama/ for information about the unofficial Xinerama patch that is included with the Gentoo ebuilds. This patch includes a preference to do exactly what I described in my initial post, but the option should be disabled by default. That is, Alt-Tab should work across all screens on a single desktop. For some reason, this behavior was enabled by default on my system even though the actual setting for it was disabled. Very weird.
To fix the problem, I edited ~/.kde3.5/share/config/kwinrc and set SeparateScreenFocus=true. This should be set to false for normal operation, but it's backwards on my system. _________________ https://www.legroom.net/ |
