I have currently one serious problem with Mozilla Thunderbird. In fact I have it from the 2.0_beta2. In 2.0_beta1 everything works. Now to the problem. When I compiled =mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird-2.0_beta2 it was working only for from about few seconds to few minutes. After that Thunderbird completely freezed. When I reverted back to 2.0_beta1 everything was fine again. Now - I have the same issue with 2.0.0.0 - both source and binary ebuild. When I run Thunderbird from console the output is something like this:
Code:
whiteraven@nobile ~ $ thunderbird
No running windows found
*** glibc detected *** /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/thunderbird-bin: free(): invalid pointer: 0x08475388 ***

Or
Code:
whiteraven@nobile ~ $ thunderbird
No running windows found
*** glibc detected *** /usr/lib/mozilla-thunderbird/thunderbird-bin: free(): invalid next size (fast): 0x08e746d0 ***

After downgrading to 2.0_beta1 everything goes fine again.
Where could be the problem?

I have the same issue with official thunderbird 2.0.0.0
I use gcc 4.1.2
When I receive any e-mail then thunderbird hangs with this message on console:

incoming messages freeze thunderbird, only those that
go into Inbox folder. when i recive Junk messages they
go into my Junk folder and thunderbird doesn't crash.

you guys, please try the following cflags & cxxflags:

Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4 -pipe -mfpmath=sse -falign-functions=64 -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2"
CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4 -pipe -mfpmath=sse -falign-functions=64 -fvisibility-inlines-hidden -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2"

the important part is the additional -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 which should detect errors / insecurities in code & prevent them, hope it helps :?:

it's working for me with (just fyi):

CFLAGS="-O2 -march=nocona -pipe -mfpmath=sse -falign-functions=64 -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2"
CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=nocona -pipe -mfpmath=sse -falign-functions=64 -fvisibility-inlines-hidden -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2"
LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--sort-common -s -Wl,--hash-style=both -Wl,-z,now -Wl,-z,relro"

but even if it detects errors, it would still mean that there are bugs in the application, wouldn't it?

it seems to lie in other parts:

what does
Code:
revdep-rebuild -i -p

say?

if that doesn't show any apps needed to re-emerge

re-emerge nss gnome-vfs, probably you need to unmerge fam (remove fam use-flag) & emerge gamin, then re-emerge thunderbird

revedep-rebuild complains about the following:

Quote:

Evaluating package order...
Warning: Failed to resolve package order.
Will merge in "random" order!
Possible reasons:
- An ebuild is no longer in the portage tree.
- An ebuild is masked, use /etc/portage/packages.keyword
and/or /etc/portage/package.unmask to unmask it
..... done.
(/root/.revdep-rebuild.5_order)

All prepared. Starting rebuild...
emerge --oneshot -p =app-crypt/gpgme-1.1.2-r1 =dev-util/subversion-1.3.2-r3 =media-video/vcdimager-0.7.21 =media-video/avifile-0.7.41.20041001-r1

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies -
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "=media-video/avifile-0.7.41.20041001-r1".

I also tried to remove fam from USE flag, re-emerged gamin, and then thunderbird but the problem still persists...

probably re-emerging the whole world?

Wow the problem was due to the theme I was using!!!

Switching to the default theme solved the problem!!! :)

This suggestion was posted on the bug report itself: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=175803

One of the theme(s) affected is the Azerty pretty mail theme for Thunderbird 1.5 - 2.0. While it works with 1.5, it doesn't with 2.0. To solve the problem, start your Thunderbird in safe mode, thus disabling all addons and themes:

Code:
[bash] ~# thunderbird -safe-mode

Then disable or uninstall your theme and restart Thunderbird, for a first try with the default theme. All should work properly now.

I wasn't using that theme, but some other one. I un-installed all themes (except the default) and the problem was fixed for me too. :x

I've the same problem on thunderbird, since yesterday update, including gtk and glib
It affects thbd when creating compose message window, and firefox when choosing what doing with one file link clicked (download or open)
It's clear that it's gtk theme related issue, no trouble with default gtk theme.
I've found the line in my gtkrc theme who cause this crash :
Code:
GtkOptionMenu::indicator_spacing         = { 8, 2, 0, 0 }

If this can help...[/code]

Hey,

Thank you very much, I was having the same problem with Thunderbird and Firefox (and OpenOffice.org was also freezing when exporting to PDF). The only way I had found to avoid those freezes was to downgrade gtk+ to 2.10.14, now I can go bleeding edge again ;-)

Anyway, do you have any idea where this nasty bug comes from ? Maybe we should report this bug...

Another idea is you peoples can just disable the Edit>Preferences>When New messages arrive: Show Alert. It fixes the freezing problem for non linux compatible themes. For me, tango icons are more important than the notification dialog, but to each his own.
