Have you disabled PNG use flag in make.conf? Do you have libpng installed?

I'm seeing the same thing here;

I had libpng installed, mplayer asked for libpng and libpng-dev (what is this one?)
Re-merged libpng, no effect.

I have USE="png" in my make.conf, and set for mplayer in package.use as well. I'm going to try a "emerge --newuse -avD mplayer" and see where it gets me.

I'll try a revdep-rebuild, and will post progress, but we'll see.

kmplayer doesn't work with this version of mplayer or the next one above it (mplayer-1.0.20070427). I always get mplayer not running, even if the file is ok. Runnig files from the normal mplayer appears to be ok.

I wonder if I need a specal post about. :?:

Hello,

3 days ago I did a
Code:
emerge -avDuN world
and got the new mplayer with it. Ever since the player takes ages to start (up to 10 seconds) and takes the same time beetween items in the playlist. I did the same on my notebook and mplayer works as usual there. Any ideas?

Asked a forum admin to remove sticky, since the forum post was originally meant to find problems with the ebuild (being so many changes), 99% of which have been worked out now, and the thread has sort of evolved into a stop-all support thread for all kinds of problems. :) I'd reccomend starting new threads to get your topic addressed.

And, as always, people can't help you if you don't provide enough information. At the very *least* gonna need emerge --info, emerge -pv mplayer, verbose errors where it's dying, and if its a file, output of midentify foo.avi.

mplayer isn't compiling for me. The error is a little unfathomable it is shown below:

And while you're at it, turn on sse and sse2 as well, seeing that you have a pentium4 cpu.

And while you're at those things....

You might consider using a desktop profile instead of a default one, since mplayer is definitely a desktop thing.

And, you should probably try some CFLAGS that take better advantage of your CPU: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Safe_Cflags.

I use this machine for development as well as movies. So I have MySQL, Apache etc on here too - will that be affected by the Desktop Profile? I have looked at the make.defaults and it looks like my make.conf USE flags cover the make.defaults of the desktop profile?

Anyway I added MMX and SSE, SSE2 to my global use flags - as you say I may as well take advantage of the processor! MMX had got left out by accident.

I am still getting the same error though:
Code:

Did you do an emerge -uDNva world to incorporate the new USE flags? Also, it's unclear from your posts whether you tried re-emerging libavcodec.

What I don't get is why it's using h264.0 while you have the x264 useflag unset. You could try setting that useflag, and pulling in x264-svn ...

And madisonicus: libavcodec is not a seperate package, it's part of mplayer.

h264 decoder is in lavc (I think).

Anyway, noticed another problem, your CFLAGS are set to i686, and this is compiling for pentium4. Try the custom-cflags use flag, or fixing your cflags. I dunno.

Well minus the a flag as I set it to run whilst I was out at a Linux User Group meeting! Yes I reemerged lbavcodec after an emerge -S libavcodec revealed its ffmpeg

See above :) When recompiling ffmpeg it warned me some libavcodec packages such as Xine-libs and vlc could break.

Have tried custom-cflags. Still no joy. Should I try ~x86 ? The update to GCC 4.1.1 and glibc 2.5 does not support the i386 flag any more. uname -a told me I was on i686 arch so thats what I used flag wise.

*Edit - missed spelling error*

ffmpeg isn't a dependency of mplayer, so that won't affect it.

Failing that does anyone know of another player that does wmv files? I really don't think mplayer will work on my machine :(

Try downgrading nasm and do a revdep-rebuild, that worked for a friend of mine.

an
Code:
emerge -pv "<dev-lang/nasm-0.98.39-r3"
showed
Code:
[ebuild     UD] dev-lang/nasm-0.98.39-r1 [0.98.39-r3] USE="doc -build" 0 kB

I figured what the heck lose nowt, that and -debug did it! Thanks/kudos to both yngwin, beandog and everyone else who tried to help me! :-)

Hi
I just get:
Code:
ar: creating libmpcodecs.a
true libmpcodecs.a
ar r libmpencoders.a ae.o ae_pcm.o ve.o ve_raw.o ae_lavc.o ve_lavc.o ve_libdv.o ve_xvid4.o ae_faac.o ae_lame.o
ar: creating libmpencoders.a
true libmpencoders.a
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/media-video/mplayer-1.0.20070321/work/mplayer/libmpcodecs'

Any idea what causes this? I get the same on one system.
