Gentoo/Freebsd - how does it work?

Hey everyone,

I've recently started using Gentoo, and so far I'm having a lot of fun with Portage

*time for newbish question*

I noticed the sys-freebsd folder, and specifically the freebsd-sources package.

I've heard about the gentoo/freebsd project, but what I wondered was how it worked - do you need do a fresh Gentoo/freebsd installation, or can you (I doubt this is possible) emerge freebsd-sources and then compile the kernel, and then boot into your Gentoo installation via grub using the Freebsd kernel on your existing installation (I guess you'd have problems with Arch settings, and you'd probably need the linux compatibility layer installed)?

If so, could be an easy way to try out Bsd's kernel :twisted:

I doubt it's that simple, though.

Didn't think it would be, Gentoo/Bsd does perk my interest though =) I'm thinking of trying it out, although I'm only just getting to grips with the x86 linux version, so I might wait a bit.

Has anyone else got any user reviews of Gentoo/Freebsd? Anyone reading this post used it? If so, what's it like, I'm guessing performance is good but obviously less drivers than linux kernel? It sounds really interesting =)

I'm pretty curious about it as well, just managed to successfully install it on my laptop, and finished emerge -e system.

So far, so good. I'm not sure how to do simple stuff like figure out how to get ACPI working, setup wireless, etc. And there's a few broken deps I've run into so far, but I'm gonna fix them when I run into them.

It looks to be an interesting challenge though.

I've been using gentoo for a long time ane liked it a lot.
Then I decided to use unix and turn to freebsd, which is very good too.
It's be great if those too comunities work togheter.
