Just joined. 7,750 SETI@home classic workunits; 8,329 SETI@home BOINC credits. I've never been a member of a team before but this one was just too compelling. Thanks, pjp!

I was a member of the gentoo linux users everywhere. I was on the top 100 with 3844 units.
I want to start using it again and came across this thread.
I merged boinc but it won't attach. It says I have the wrong key.
I have an account and it says I am a member of GLUE.
What key do I use?
I tried:
Account number and Cross-project ID from my account page at setiweb.
id and key from user_info.sah from the setiathome install.
I would like to start contributing again but I can seem to join.
Thanks
--Update--
Right after I posted, I figured it out. I had to re-activate my account at setiweb. _________________ The strong must protect the Sweet. |

I've been away from the team for several years and have Just rejoined with the boinc client. In 24 hours I''ve moved to 24th in the team standings. Somethings gotta be wrong !!!!! =) _________________ There are no facts...

I would say that it's lost a little steam. My three main machines put me at 8th. By the way, 24th in "total credit" or "recent average credit"? I didn't think they were doing this, but, perhaps you're getting credit for "SETI@Home Classic" work units.

The default listing of the team is by recent average, I jumped from the bottom of the list to 16th possition too (and looking at what I'm putting out in terms of units, I'll probably level out at arround 12th possition)
I wish more people would join again, the team is still in the top 100 but barely and there are some teams jumping up the ranks that could push us out of the top 100 within a month or 2.
If you look at the rank of GLUE in F@H you'll see Gentoo Users Everywhere are doing damn good, just a pitty not more of them are using BOINC/F@H |

Hi guys,
anyone know how I'd go about limiting the CPU usage of boinc? It's just as much as I'd like to donate cycles, I don't want to burn fans (mainly for my laptop) and when when it's going I always have my thermalmalt on full blast which makes a hell of a noise...
So on that no is there any solution?
I know that 5.8.* has some sort of control on the cpu usage but it's not in portage and to be honest, I've had enough experience (or better yet lack of) installing thing that are not in portage to know that I might eventually bork up the installation...
Any suggestions?

Put your seti password in /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg. Restart boinc. Run boinc_gui and go to "Advanced>>Select Computer, for hostname put in "localhost" for password "your_seti_passworf". Now go to task select a running task and under Commands>>Show graphics. You can leave it going full sized or minimized and it should lower your temperature by 4-5C. It does so on my "pentium 805 D" a dual core 90nm prescott., a hot sucker. But it also seems slow down processing by around 50%, thats just a guess.

I'm in! I have a couple of questions though. I'm using the emerged boinc, and everything works but 2 things: 1) I have no graphics, the button is NOT grayed out but when I click it nothing happens. 2) Same things with any of the buttons that should open a browser, buttons clickable but nothing happens. Should I unmerge and compile the source manually? I hate doing that and prefer to stick to ebuilds as much as possible but can and will if I need to. I did not unmask and emerge seti. I didn't think there was a need to since all I had to do was click attach to project and select the url and enter my user info. |

I'm having trouble running boinc on a headless intel64 machine (running amd64 stable). For a while I couldn't even attach (but I think that's because I was using the weak account key). The boinc.log seems to get stuck at the last line here:

* Stopping BOINC ... [ !! ] |
and the log just says:
Code: | 2008-03-13 16:07:15 [---] Received signal 15 |
All the instructions tell me to run the gui, but this is a headless server! I have a dual-cpu 4-core machine here that's just itching to join in but it can't! Any tips?
thanks. |

Back in the days on windows I run seti as screensaver, I emerged now BOINC and connected to my seti account, but I don't know how to start the processing as a screensaver. _________________ Linux User #422770 |

I know this is an old (very old) thread, but I thought I would put in my 2 cents. I run Ubuntu on my dual core dell pc and installed boinc. It's running seti@home very well. However, my IBM pSeries (ppc64) runs Gentoo. It took me about a week, but I finally managed to install Boinc from the latest available Ebuild. Since ppc64 isn't supported, I had to compile setiathome_enhanced from source and set up my box as anonymous. Compiling from source for a non-Mac powerpc was a nightmare and required the install of boinc-6.2.15 from source so that I could compile setiathome_enhanced from source. Since the boinc from source didn't work correctly and didn't install an init script, I had to uninstall it and reinstall the ebuild.
I do now have setiathome-6.3.powerpc64-unknown-linux-gnu installed and working with sci-misc/boinc-6.2.15. I did join the Linux Users Everywhere group before I saw the GentooLUE group. I think I'll switch now, though since LUE seems kind of antisocial. I think it's kind of strange that there are no ebuilds for setiathome_enhanced since not all archs are supported by automatic download. I am definitely interested in helping get that changed.
I guess I'll go change groups now. _________________ Greg |
