For a person new to Gentoo, would you recommend using the Live CD or the Minimal CD to install? |

Use the minimal cd (or any other livecd: knoppix, ubuntu...). You can install from any other working linux system. For example, you can install gentoo from a terminal window on your SuSE installation or whatever distro you use.
Don't use the Gentoo LiveCD/DVD. It has many problems, between them, there are problems with the X server being able to load the correct drivers. That is a hamless one. Another less funny is the possibility of getting all your partitions erased without previous warning.
So, either pick the minimal cd or any other distro livecd, and use the handbook to install by hand from stage3.

This is for x86, but there are handbooks for more architectures as well, in case you need them.
