Hi A simple question but it is hard to find an answer. How do I stop kaffeine starting e.g dvds. It plays automaticallly and I have to stop it and quit to load the app I want to use.

Is KDE your desktop? If so, click the kmenu, and go to:
Code: |
Settings --> Peripherals --> Storage Media
|
You should be able to find the notifications responsible for the annoying behavior. If you just want them all to go away, then go to:
Code: |
Settings --> KDE Components --> Service Manager
|
There will be an entry called "Media Notifier Daemon". Disabling that should shut KDE up. Also, you can probably get it to use the app you really want by editing associations:
Code: |
Settings --> KDE Components --> File Associations
|

Thanks didymos
yes kde is my desktop
Settings --> Peripherals --> Storage Media
In Notifications gave a list of apps for Medium types of 'All Mime Types' are
Extract and Encode
Play
Play audio with amarok
copy with k9copy
Play audio with kaffeine
Play dvd with kaffeine
Play vcd with kaffeine
Do Nothing
If I click on any of these the only option highlighted is add and I can't delete or use any other option. I can add types to this possibly adding actions and then delete them but I can't seem to do anything with above list.
In the advance tab I have 3 boxes ticked 1 enable Hal backend 2 Enable CD polling 3 Enable medium application autostart after mount.
Also the help option does not work.
Your second suggestion of
Settings --> KDE Components --> Service Manager disabling 'media notifier daemon' seems to work and probably that could do me.
But I did like the option of choosing a program to run. I also would like to know what is going on and how to modify it. I am not too keen on apps like Kaffeine setting up their own configuration and not being giving the user the option to use it or not or indeed making it hard to find that option. |

If you ever think there might be some setting you're not seeing, dig around in the ~/.kde directory. All (I think) kde programs will stash their rc files and whatnot in there. _________________ Thomas S. Howard |
