Trying to get Gentoo to work on my Acer Aspire 5024 wlmi laptop. Having gotten it to boot into linux with working network, I set out to install most of the software on it. Leaving the laptop to emerge xorg I later return to find it shut off.
Turning it back on and checking my log files:
/var/log/messages
Code: | Mar 19 18:37:07 darlington ACPI: Critical trip point
Mar 19 18:37:07 darlington Critical temperature reached (102 C), shutting down.
Mar 19 18:37:07 darlington shutdown[11450]: shutting down for system halt
Mar 19 18:37:07 darlington init: Switching to runlevel: 0

It got too hot.
Here's some more data about my system

gentoo-sources 2.6.19-gentoo-r5; no genkernel; not a 64-bit system.
Has anyone else had similar problems, and possibly solutions?
EDIT
Here's my kernel config; containing quite a bit more drivers than I'll need.

Do the fans run at all when you run something CPU-intensive ? Are there other ACPI-related messages in the logs that could indicate ACPI problems ? |

The fan is always running, and always at the same speed. No different under windows. However under windows I've noticed the CPU speed gets reduced for a few seconds whenever the temperature gets too hot (>77 degrees celcius or something).
/proc/acpi/fan is completely empty.
I'm also using the acer-acpi module to allow me to enable/disable wlan.
Didn't find anything else ACPI-related in the logs, except for the usual boot messages.
Here are the boot messages from dmesg (I've removed anything not related to acpi):

I've decided to give this problem another look and now it's solved!
I used the kernel config at http://www.fwconsult.com/acer-install/laptop-install.html
At the same time I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.21-gentoo-r4
Now it's behaving like I also observed in Windows, whenever the temperature reaches a certain threshold (85 celcius) the CPU is slowed down from 1800 to 800 MHz so it can cool down again, after which it goes back up to 1800 MHz. No more overheating. |
