I already checked this thread.
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=7982
- Without kernel pcmcia bindings I couldn't emerge pcmcia-cs.
- Recompiled kernel with pcmcia support and could emerge pcmcia-cs.
- now cardmgr is finding no sockets and failing to start, and it is telling me to make sure I have PCMCIA.
So I guess the question is how to I get the kernel to recognize it? I guess I need a driver for the pcmcia reader, but I don't have a clue how to find which one or install it.
It never ceases to amaze me how much and at the same time how little I know about linux. =/
I guess it is just punishing me for trying to use it as a workspace instead of a server...
Anyway, if anyone remembers pcmcia cards, I appreciate the help. _________________ chown -R us ./base

As far as I know, pcmcia-cs is severely deprecated nowadays, you should rip it out and use pcmciautils for the userspace part. |

Sounds good to me, how do I go about getting it out?

emerge -unmerge pcmcia-cs? Will this cause problems? _________________ chown -R us ./base

Yepp, just unmerge it via "emerge -C" or "emerge --unmerge" . Then, you can safely merge pcmciautils. A good read for post-2.6.13 pcmcia is http://kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/pcmcia/pcmcia.html and the linked pages, also, you can google for more information... Of course, this doesn't guarantee that your hardware will work afterwards. |

Forgive me for asking, but if you don't need the software do you have any PCMCIA sockets in your system??
If this is the case then no wonder the kernel couldn't find any when it booted! |

I don't recall ever saying I didn't need the software, and of course I have PCMCIA sockets. It's a Inspiron laptop. _________________ chown -R us ./base
