Disable or Delay DHCP Renewal [Solved]

It seems many wireless routers are now doing hourly DHCP renewals. This is a major annoyance because when this happens my vpn disconnects. Is there some way to disable or delay this renewal when I'm connected to the vpn?

Latest when the lease time is over the server can reuse the ip and give it to another client so that is probably not a good idea to try, see also RFC2131.

Use a dhcp client that doesn't disable the address on the interface in between renewals such as dhcpcd-3.x
