Is there a filesystem type that can, or a way of being able to, compress data on the fly as it's written to disc (and uncompressed when it's read)?

- ext2: e2compr
- reiserfs: could be implemented as plugin (compression plugin)
- sun's: ZFS, beiing currently ported to linux as FUSE-Module

- cloop and co, are compressed but readonly and not changeable
in use.

I saw your thread after I posted mine about e2comp. I'm going to patch up my kernel and give that a try. May need your help with some aspects of it, or feel free to PM me if you want me to test anything specific.

Hi Everybody!

I ported e2compr to the actual kernel 2.6.22.x.
I released a new patch which I consider as stable, so far.
It is possible to patch it against the current 2.6.22.6-kernel
and it does all the necessary kernel configuration now by
itself. Get it here:
