gentoo under vmware eth0 not found -- SOLVED (sort of)

I am trying to set up a win-xp-pro hp nw8240 laptop running vmware workstation 6.0 with gentoo running in the vm. I have created the basic virtual machine, and I can boot a live-cd on it and everything seems to work fine. In particular, the network works on eth0. I am running the virtual network in nat mode. Using this setup, I was able to partition the virtual disk and follow the standard installation procedure to install a gentoo system on the virtual disk, including grub to boot it and everything. I manually configured the kernel, 2.6.22-gentoo-r5. The ethernet is nowhere to be found. During booting, I get the following:

It sounds very much like you have selected the wrong kernel module of udev has renamed your eth0.

I have already done the ifconfig -a; I just forgot to mention it in my previous post. Indeed, there is only lo and sit0 that show up, no eth* at all.

What does an lsmod show when you're booted from the LiveCD (I think the LiveCD's mostly modular)? This should point out what driver to use (though I thought it was the pcnet32 - been a while since I used vmware though).

There were obviously a bunch of modules loaded by the genkernel from the live-cd, including pcnet32. I am not at my laptop right now, but I will try to get that information written to a file that I can pull into winxp so I can post it exactly, ditto for my .config file.

Meanwhile, don't be so sure Scotland will excuse you from having dinner with me, although I cannot give a timeframe. I am an avid salmon fisherman, and it would be a dream vacation to fish the River Spey or the Aberdeen Dee someday. If I make it over there, we still ought to hook up for dinner.

You and your rods better fly first class. A guy I used to work with wanted to get a good sot on the Tay for a day with a Ghillie. He was quoted £5000 ($10,0000) and that only allowed him to fish. Maybe you would get discount for a whole week ?

Prices must have really gone up in the last 3 or 4 years. That's the last time I priced it, and it was much more reasonable than that.

Oh well, so much for OT discussion. I came in last night and my road warrior laptop was running it weekly Peter Norton malware scan, so I decided to let it finish and take a nap. I woke up this morning. So no progress made last night. Gotta work today -- big panic all of a sudden for some config tables. I will try to do the module removing experiment tonight.

Thanks for your help. I will not be able to do anything on this for at least 7 more hours. I am at work, on a Sunday, on what here in the States is a holiday 3 day weekend. Sudden panic broke out Thursday morning, and I am the one to solve it. By the time I get a chance to try anything on the vmware problem, you should be sound asleep in bed. If I learn anything, I will post again before I go to bed tonight -- about 5 AM UST.

Do yourself a favor and change the following in you .vmx file for your Gentoo VM under My Documents\My Virtual Machines\<Virtual Machine Name>

Hmm - you could have just changed the network to e1000 and left the SCSI alone.
Changing it back should make it work again, unless you remade the kernel.

I have a problem with vmwere - the VM machine powers off when I boot the liveCD, so as yet, I can't actually install

I did rebuild the kernel, as I needed to add the PRO/1000 ethernet interface into it anyway, and I added the buslogic and removed the lsilogic. I can boot with the live-cd to fix it.

Incidently, the live-cd I am using is 2006-1, so the kernel is pretty old, yet it seems to work fine under vmware. Maybe I should just fall back to an older kernel version? If so, how do I fetch an old kernel version, and which version should I fetch?

edit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

Had same problem with VMWare Workstation and came here searching for a solution, after messing around it works and i think what fixed things was to make the AMD PCnet32 driver a module, there should be other ways to fix it also. Didnt need to edit the vmx file.

Heres a step by step solution for newbies like me, maybe the cp step is redundant for all i know but better safe than sorry:
# cd /usr/src/linux
# make menuconfig
Go to Device Drivers
- Network device support
- - Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit)
- - - AMD PCnet32 PCI support
..and set that to M for module

Then exit menuconfig, Yes to save new kernel config.
# make
# make modules_install
# cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel
# reboot

When I think about it, that actually makes some sense. Modules are loaded and initialized later in the boot sequence than compiled in drivers. Perhaps vmware workstation is not ready to establish the network connection so early in the boot sequence as a compiled in driver requires.

I actually just set up my laptop at the local Starbucks and just had a carafe of French Roast coffee placed on my table prior to downloading the new update: vmware ws 6.0.1, which fixes -- among other things -- some *VERY* nasty sequrity problems. If you haven't fetched this update yet, you should do so quickly, because now that the vuln has een announced, you can bet the black hats will be devveloping exploits!

I will install the 6.0.1 abd then try your module approach.

Oh yes, you *DO* need to do that "cp" step!

PS I don't normally do most of my computiing at Starbucks, but you can't beat the coffee, and my wife is shopping, so I am hanging out here for while. And no, I don't use the wifi here, although T-mobil is pretty decent about authentication. I use Sprint PCS broadband wireless, which works almost everywhere -- except near a certain trout stream in northeastern Iowa.

I installed vmware workstation 6.0.1 and then installed gentoo using a module for the ethernet driver instead of staticly compiling it into the kernel, and indeed, it worked!

However, I did notice one time when rebooting the kernel, that it was unable to obtain a dhcp address, so I did an ifconfig -a and the device was there, but dhcp timed out -- or something.

I think what we are seeing is a race condition, where using a module means the race usually comes out on the good side, while using a static drive looses. To my way of thinking, this constitutes a bug in vmware workstation 6.0.1, and I will probably report it as such to them.

Nevertherless, I now at least have a system that I can go on to use for what I originally intended, although I realize that 1 out of 20 or so boots may not bring up networking properly. :evil:

thanks for the thread. Adding it as a module worked for me as well. No vmx modifications necessary.
