Ok ...

I have a little network connected to ADSL (pptp). The connection is shared by my gentoo box to another gentoo box ... (masquerade, etc)... everything work well !

But ! I need for a week or two to replace the gentoo gateway with a Windows XP box ... So under XP i activated ICS, tried to ping yahoo, google, etc on the other gentoo pc ... no problem!

But for some sites, like google (which can be useful ;)) mozilla, lynx, wget, are all resolving, connecting, but wait with the following string : "wait for www.google.fr" ... When i come back to my gentoo gateway, no more problem ...

I know it is not gentoo, but you're my last hope ;)

Fabien

AFAIR this is a problem with the MTU size.
Set it to (max.) 1460 on every machine 'behind' the XP gateway

mhh, so what are your exact settings on the two boxes?

ping is working?
no packet loss?
traceroute is working?
does this happen to ALL http-sites or just a few of them?
is it only http related? what about https/telnet/smtp/...?

XP as dhcp server (should be activated by ICS)
dns server should be (i think) the XP box, otherwise your ISP's dns servers
latest SP/HF installed on the XP box? (i know, there are thousands  )

- ping works
- no packet loss
- traceroute works
- happens only for some sites (google, yahoo, gentoo, etc.) --> www.gentoo.org works but forums.gentoo.org doesn't !!!!!!!!!!!!!

- smtp works, don't know for telnet nor https

No software installed for a long time on xp... no service pack

tracepath fr.yahoo.com
tracepath www.google.fr

both of them indicate "no reply" after a few hops ...

eg fr.yahoo.com indicate "no reply" after (included) bas1.35.uk1.yahoo.com

(I don't know if this results are normal or not)

I'm using an almost identical setup (except with a cable modem instead of adsl). It works perfectly fine here.

Code:
root@laureate:/usr/portage/sys-apps/portage/files# ping www.google.fr
PING www.google.com (216.239.39.99) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 216.239.39.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=51 time=21.9 ms

Try using the raw IP address.
