|

hello gentooers,
after doing a major upgrade, most sound apps come up with this error (including aplay). mplayer keeps working.
my sound chip is hda-intel and i've tried both the in-kernel alsa module and the external one.
the mixer is alright, esound is off, i'm out of ideas.. :S
thanks in advance!
btw, does anyone know if the beryl ebuild has already fallen behind the compiz one?

See wiki. I suggest going back to the previous, working kernel you had. |

As a temporary workaround I added Code: | >=media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.14
>=media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.14a-r1 |
to /etc/portage/package.mask . _________________ man cannot be brave without being afraid |

Just to say that I have the same problem after updating alsalib and alsa-utils.
Mplayer works, artsd crashes, and at first also wine was affected. Revdep-rebuild does not help.
The strange thing about wine was that revdep-rebuild thought that everything was fine, but wine kept complaining that it could not find some symbols [in alsa]. So I thought I'd just manually "emerge -1 wine". So then wine tells me that I need to first emerge alsa with the 'midi' useflag. That's strange, because both wine and alsa are already installed! Anyway I added the "midi" useflag, reemerged alsalib, then wine, and now sound works again in wine.
After that I reemerged arts, but that does not seem to make a difference. _________________ "Man fears the darkness, and so he scrapes away at the edges of it with fire."

i had similar situation..
after alsa update to 1.0.14a sound stopped working correctly..
it was impossible to play sound from more than one source with errors saying that device is busy, etc..
i've lost nearly 6 hours to figure it out, and without success..
the only solution i've found was to downgrade alsa-libs, alsa-headers, alsa-utils and alsa-tools to version 1.0.13
now sound is working fine again |

Hello,
I have the same problem. Are there any solutions found than downgrade?
greetings aleX
P.S. Downgrade does not solve the artsd is not starting problem (I just tried)
This is what I get trying to start artsd manually:
ALSA lib pcm_rate.c:1325:(snd_pcm_rate_open) Cannot open library for type samplerate
artsd: pcm.c:695: snd_pcm_close: Assertion `pcm' failed. |

I have the conexant venice chipset and downgrading alsa-lib and stuff was the only solution to me (using the in-kernel drivers). i don't know about arts but esd functions perfectly. |

Did you guys play with the new ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS variable? Add some plugins, or add all of them, and you should be fine. |

Hi everybody,
for me the issue is not solved. I tried all the above and still artsd doesn't start.
I get this:
alex@cube ~ $ artsd
ALSA lib pcm_rate.c:1381:(snd_pcm_rate_open) Cannot find rate converter
any suggestions?

Reading the bug report (stabilization bug for alsa .14) it seems that using a desktop profil makes portage _not_ set every PCM plugin by default. So in case you got something like this,
Code: | ls -lh /etc/make.profile
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 56 9. Aug 14:35 /etc/make.profile -> ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2007.0/desktop |
ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS is empty by default, whereas when you have for instance
Code: | ls -lh /etc/make.profile
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 56 9. Aug 14:35 /etc/make.profile -> ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2007.0 |
every plugin is selected by default.
@trakon88: Try adding "route" to ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS (or just set them all).
Regards |

Hi everybody,
thank you very much. I already added:
ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="alaw copy dshare dsnoop extplug null shm adpcm file hooks ladspa lfloat linear meter mulaw multi rate route share"
to /etc/make.conf
I did : emerge -evD alsa-lib audiofile && emerge arts kdelibs
tonight
all this did not help. I also tried build in kernel modules and alsa-drivers still artsd is failing ...
what else can help?
aleX
P.S. I also tried: ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="route" only - did not help
SOLVED
OK my fault! I solved everything by deleting /etc/asound.conf as suggested by emerge
SOLVED for me!! |

for me,when i type
#artsd
i get
unix_connect: can't connect to server (unix:/tmp/ksocket-zoe/zoe.zoe-gen.local-1c3f-46db0cf3)
artsd: pcm_plug.c:67: snd_pcm_plug_close: Assertion `plug->gen.slave == plug->req_slave' failed.

Hi,
try this:
echo ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="alaw copy dshare dsnoop extplug null shm adpcm file hooks ladspa lfloat linear meter mulaw multi rate route share" >> /etc/make.conf
then:
emerge alsa-libs
maybe then:
rm /etc/asound.conf
rm /home/yourhomedirectoryname/.asoundrc
but: You have a different errormessage then me - so maybe the solution for you is different

I was able to fix this problem on my computer by setting: Code: | ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw dmix extplug ioplug plug rate" | in /etc/make.conf; and emerging alsa-lib. I used the process of elimination on the ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS variable and re-emerging alsa-lib (PS: I'm using version 1.0.14a-r1) and I think the above settings are the minimum needed for my computer. All the possibilities for this version of alsa-lib are, according to emerge: Code: | adpcm alaw extplug rate -copy -dshare -dsnoop -file -hooks -ladspa -lfloat -linear -meter -mulaw -multi -null -route -share -shm | I know of no reason not to include them all. Even though they aren't in the list I included dmix, ioplug and plug because this howto said that they were important. After emerging, I ended my KDE session from the "K" menu and restarted KDE and alsa: Code: | /etc/init.d/xdm stop
/etc/init.d/alsasound stop
/etc/init.d/alsasound start
/etc/init.d/xdm start |
If you happen to know why one should or should not include all the libraries I'd love to know.
zoe, does that help?

hi everyone and thanks for the reply Aries97.i managed to fix my problem by doing this(sorry but i didn't see your post until now and i was going to write the solution tha fixed it for me).First i completely removed alsa-lib,arts and kde libs and after that i did this,following a previous post
Quote: | emerge -evD alsa-lib audiofile && emerge arts kdelibs |
After this everything was fine and no problem with sound.
EDIT:also added "rate" in my etc/make. conf at the ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS section.That's the steps i followed and your solution is far easier to check first before doing the emerge.thanks for the reply |
