Kernel compilation crashed with unresolved references to prom_meminit() and prom_free_prom_memory() on my Octane machine. I found that the problem was not enabling CONFIG_ARC_MEMORY option so arch/mips/arc/memory.c didn't compile. I got around the issue by adding IP30 to the config ARC_MEMORY section of arch/mips/Kconfig.
I haven't yet tested my kernel properly. I can only report that it compiled and booted.
I'd like to know if the CONFIG_ARC_MEMORY on IP30 was omited intentionaly or if it is a bug. _________________ hanc |

THANKS! helped me, too.
about to install on an octane,
* netboot-2006.0 2.6.14.6-mipsgit-20051030-ip30r10k+
* gcc 4.1.1,
* mips-sources 2.6.20.18-20070902.ip30,
* kgcc64 4.1.1...
has anyone got some more information on this issue? |

hanc: That is indeed a bug... pester `Kumba on #gentoo-mips, or file a bug.
nop2001: What issue? You don't mention any. _________________ Stuart Longland (a.k.a Redhatter, VK4MSL)

on octane2 equipped with GFX_ImpactSR (GFX~=the video board), X11 is pretty
if you have a sgi-machine not equipped with a supported GFX .... no problem !
you could use Xvnc to export X11 to an other machine (a notebook, for example)
personally i find Xvnc very interesting on an octane equipped with GFX_{V6,V8,V12}
the GFX_V* family is still not supported by X11, but with Xvnc i have X11 fun |

My Octane came with a V6 and I outfitted it with an additional SE, so I have both.
However X over some sort of framebuffer is not exactly my idea of fun, and what's the use of a workstation you have to remote control by (glacially slow, btw) XVnc. |

XDMCP isn't too bad usually. In fact, it can be faster than IMPACT, since the Octane isn't worried about the specifics behind drawing on the screen, and the X server is presumably running a driver with full acceleration. _________________ Stuart Longland (a.k.a Redhatter, VK4MSL)
