Whenever I have nm-applet connect wirelessly to an AP at my college or work, I find that it will change my computer's host name to something else. As a result, I find I can no longer open applications such as terminal or even my web browser. I've already created a dhclient.conf file as the gentoo wiki suggests, but this does not solve the problem. Has anyone else run across this?

No one knows why this would be happening? This doesn't happen with nm-applet on other distros....

Then perhaps you could compare the configurations used on the system displaying this behavior with the configuration of one which does not. If you remain unsure of the solution try posting both, or at least links to both.

If I compile nm-applet manually instead of using the ebuild then it works just fine as it should work. Looks like something is implemented wrong in the Gentoo ebuild...figures.

Which is rather interesting considering that the ebuild appears to only patch a single configuration file without making any other changes to the package. Perhaps you could compare the configuration you are using with the manually built version with the configuration which the ebuild uses by default.
