The driver packages themselves go into /usr/portage/distfiles as usual. The ati-drivers.tar.bz2 file should be extracted into /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers (you may need to create that directory first, that's OK). When the ebuilds are extracted, run Code: | ebuild /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-3.2.0-r2.ebuild digest
ebuild /usr/local/portage/media-video/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-3.2.4-r2.ebuild digest |
to generate digests for the two most recent ebuilds. Then you should be able to emerge them as normal (you'll need to use ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"). _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

at school at the moment, I had a brief look at it this mourning and I noticed I can switch between gui (which turns off my screen) and console with the ctrl+alt+fx thingy, I'm pretty sure I set the monitor settings correctly, I know the refresh rates by heart by now aha |

Try fiddling with the NoDDC, IgnoreEDID, and DPMS (in the Monitor section) options. Also, try setting the refresh rates for your monitor lower than they actually are, and see if that helps. _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

Tried changing around all those options and using low refresh rates but still now luck
Should I have "Synch buffer swaps with vertical synch signal" off? (its currently off) |

Can you post your most recent XF86Config and logfile?
The sync buffer swaps thing shouldn't make any difference AFAIK. Another thing you could try is setting a value for the "VRefresh2" driver option. Start off at 60. I think you might need IgnoreEDID set to "on" for it to have an effect. _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

I'm pretty sure my log file is almost exactly the same, as the last one I showed you
I'll boot into linux and try what you said with the Vrefresh2 thing |

Another thing to try: if you've got something like this Code: | Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0 # initial origin if mode is smaller than desktop
# Virtual 1280 1024
EndSubsection |
in your config, try putting a lower resolution as the first mode, to see if it'll start up like that. _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

Well, tuxracer still seems to crash after a while. The music just keeps going in the background.
The Xfree log doesn't say anything, I'll probably have to turn off buffering in metalog to see anything from the kernel module that happened at the last moment...
Edit: seems buffering was off all the time.. There was only one error, something about allocation failed.
Any ideas? |

What's the error?

If you're going to use it a lot, the easiest thing to do is add it to the menu (~/.fluxbox/menu). Add a line like this: Code: | [exec] (gftp) {gftp} |
and it should appear next time you display the menu. For running programs that aren't in the menu without an xterm, you can use fbrun. It just opens a little text window, you type in the program name, and it starts it for you. You could add an entry for that to the menu as well. _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

Which version of the drivers are you using? Remember that the 3.2.4's are beta. _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

And it doesn't take quite as long to compile as KDE does
From your XFree log: Code: | (EE) fglrx(0): [agp] unable to acquire AGP, error "xf86_ENODEV"
(EE) fglrx(0): cannot init AGP |
This generally means that you don't have AGP support compiled into your kernel, or you have it compiled as modules but don't have the modules loaded.
Are you running a dual monitor setup? _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

I have a duel monitor set up but I have that monitor turned off and set it up as single monitor in fglrxconfig, should I try unplugging the second monitor?

I have no experience of using dual monitors, but from the log it looks like the driver detects both, so it might be worth a try.

OK, but you also need the module for your motherboard, ie "via-agp" or "nvidia-agp" or whatever. _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

IT WORKED!!!! I could kiss you Wedge_!
I'm not sure if it was the unplugging of second monitor of modprobing via_agp though
running 1280 * 1024 @ 85Hz - beautiful, no more headaches for me
I'm retty sure it was having that second monitor plugged in, I've tried unpluging it before but that was when I was using a kernel that didn't support my chpset so it didn't work anyways...
Best day of my life, can't believe its finally actually working! |

Great to hear it Like I said before, I'm not the person to ask for dual monitor help, but at least you've got a working setup now. _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

yeh I don't even use the duel monitor I was just playing around with it, and it wasn't that handy in linux, but now I'm using fluxbox it seems like it actually could be handy, but I don't know if its worth the effort of setting it up. |

oh, one more thing, is there an app for fluxbox that displays your folders and stuff like in gnome and kde (when you click on home or whatever), hard to explain what I mean
To navigate my system files with a GUI
- still so many other things I have to work out, I gotta get sound happening, configure this desktop to my liking and lots of other crap aha, but at least I can look at my monitor for longer than 2 minutes now |

That kind of program is usually called a file manager. fluxbox doesn't have one built in, so you have to emerge one yourself. If you have KDE or Gnome installed, you can still use their file managers under fluxbox. There are plenty of others that don't depend on KDE or Gnome though. Try emerging emelfm (I use this), rox, or endeavour. There are also some threads about file managers and fluxbox in the forums, have a search around.

Yeah, 60Hz is "instant headache mode" _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra

For anyone that's using the 3.2.x drivers: I was looking at my log file and saw this Code: | (**) fglrx(0): EnablePrivateBackZ = NO |
This option isn't in the file fglrxconfig generates, and I have no idea what it does, but adding Code: | Option "EnablePrivateBackZ" "yes" |
to the Device section in XF86Config gave me an extra 200-300 fps on glxgears and 5fps more in q3a. Not a big difference, but every little helps _________________ Per Ardua Ad Astra
