I am using postfix to send intrusion detection notifications to a host inside my local network. It is only running on my internal network interface, so that only my one host may use it. Postfix sends these emails to my users mailbox at /var/spool/mail/user/.maildir/ just fine, only issue is I cannot retrieve them via Outlook. I do not want to run courier-pop3 or imap services because they seem to enable themselves on all interfaces. Is there a way to check mail using a mail client such as Outlook without running pop3 or imap services? If not, can I run pop3 or imap only on my internal network interface?

There's no way that I know of without a POP3 / IMAP daemon of sorts. Although I would
prefer to use courier you should check out net-mail/dovecot
as it's very simple to setup and can be configured to listen on a specific interface only.

Thanks for the fast response. I will give dovecot a try; I don't need anything real secure since it is only ran on my internal network and no sensitive mail is being sent. All the documentation I have found for dovecot so far have it being configured along side squirrelmail or someother mailer. I should be able to do what I am wanting with postfix and dovecot only right?

Yup. We ran Dovecot and Postfix on all our old servers with minimal problems.

Good luck :)

I just use Mutt and read the stuff on the server itself.
