This is probably a stoopid question, but... (There are not stupid questions... only stupid people who ask them <grin>)
I'm trying to configure a stand-alone networked HP-6840 color printer. I have previously set this printer up, but now seem to be totally stymied.
I can access the printer's built-in web server, and port scans indicate it is responding to ports 9100, 9101, & 9102. However, the hp utility "hp-setup" reports that it can't find the printer. When I run this same setup program on a debian computer in my network, it finds the printer without any trouble.
Likewise, when I use kprint to set it up, I can't find a driver for it (I thought it was included in gimp-print), and I cannot find the hpijs driver.
3 questions for someone more knowledgeable than I:
1. How do I find the hpijs driver? It does not seem to appear under the "HP" printer selection, or under the suggested alternative of Deskjet 990C.
2. How can I troubleshoot the connection to the HP?
3. Could the fact that I haven't setup my usb-connected LaserJet with hplip have anything to do with this? (I hate to muck up a working CUPS setup for my local printer)
Thanks in advance for any suggested advice! _________________ Casey Bralla

I'n not sure you really need hpijs to let CUPS speak JetDirect to that thing of yours. Presumably, because it's networked, HP, and standalone, it speaks JetDirect. |

Installing hplip with the 'minimal' USE flag will give you just the hpjis drivers. |

I finally noticed the message printed at the end of emerging hplij. It said this:
* Not installing built-in PPD files, which is probably not what you want.
* You need USE=ppds if you want to install them.
Yeah, probably not want I wanted....
Setting the "ppds" USE flag, then re-emerging foomatic-db did the trick. Suddnely, a whole bunch of new printers appeared on the list, one of which was mine. _________________ Casey Bralla
