|
|
I installed gentoo on this computer which has a AMD64 3500, GA-K8NSC-939 motherboard, and a ATI 9800 Pro. I've been having a lot of trouble to get my gui working. All I'm able to get to is tvm. I'm wondering if there are any issues with the ati-drivers and AMD64 processors and boards? I even got fed up with trying to get it working and tried uninstalling it and using the free radeon driver. Sadly, it couldn't even find that driver. So, I'm trying to do the ATI drivers again. I've spent all day on this.
the last part of the error is
fglrx: no matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
Module already built in
fglrx(0): [agp] unable to acquire AGP, error "xf86_ENODEV"
fglrx(0): cannot init AGP
AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
I was also looking through the log and it mentions that the DRI initialization failed. I'm thinking I might have removed that and rebuilt the kernel when I got frustrated. I should put that back and the other things from the Hardware 3D Acceleration Guide, but should I do them as Modules or the other option?
I rather wish I would have gotten an nvidia card, but that can't be helped. I'm not going to be putting anymore into this computer. I'm going to make sure my next computer uses a nvidia card though.
I did see in my research that the latest release of the drivers wasn't that good. Would the last version be any better? |

I've been doing some more searching on the forum. From there, I learned about dmesg and tried it.
dmesg | grep agp
Code: | agpgart: Detected AGP bridge 0
agpgart: Aperture pointing to RAM
agpgart: Aperture from AGP@ f0000000 size 4096 MB
agpgart: Aperture too small (0 MB)
agpgart: No useable aperture found.
agpgart: Consider rebooting with iommu=memaper=2 to get a good aperture
Linux agpgart interface v0.102
kojbject_add failed for amd64_agp with -EEXIST, don't try to register things with the same name in the same directory |
dmesg | grep fglrx
Code: | [fglrx] Maximum main memory to use for locked dma buffer: 857 MB.
[fglrx] USWC is disabled in module parameters
[fglrx]PAT is disabled!
[fglrx] module loaded - fglrx 8.40.4 [July 31 2007] on minor 0
[fglrx] internal AGP is not supported in 2.6 kernel.
[fglrx:firegl_unlock] *ERROR* Process 5030 using kernel context 0 |
This is really beginning to irritate me. I actually had an older version of gentoo installed before I did my reformat. I didn't have this much trouble when I installed it last time. I didn't really use it much though since I never took the time to get my TV tuners to work with it. I'll be doing more with it this time. I really need some help. |

Hi I guess its an Nforce3 chipset, you might find a solution here
I have a similar problem i.e. Quote: | agpgart: Aperture from AGP@ f0000000 size 4096 MB
agpgart: Aperture too small (0 MB)
agpgart: No useable aperture found. |
but never got the ENODEV error
currently I use the patch there, it has so far applied to kernels including my current one 2.6.23-gentoo-r3
I have an asrock AM2 board with nforce3 chipset and an AIW9800SE |

Thanks for the reply. I'll probably look into this tomorrow since I'm tired from working on this all day. I looked through that page on you linked to, but couldn't find anywhere to get the patch. I'm sure if I completely understand where they are installing the patch.
If this doesn't work, I'll just have to go to the radeon driver, if I can get that working. I was even having problems with that not being found. Either that or I'll have to wait till I can get a new card. I got Debian installed on this computer as well, but I don't imagine I would have much better luck getting the ati drivers to get installed on that either. |

Hi the patch is at the bottom of the page here
the patch is applied to the kernel sources - look in the patch to see the files it applies to.
You dont fully describe the faukt - do you just not get dri since you say Quote: | All I'm able to get to is tvm. |
This implies you get X working but not any other DM, have you installed any yet KDE, Gnome, XFCE4 ...?
Also...
Quote: | I rather wish I would have gotten an nvidia card, |
As far as I can tell this is a chipset kernel problem and graphics independant
And again.. Quote: | I was also looking through the log and it mentions that the DRI initialization failed. I'm thinking I might have removed that and rebuilt the kernel when I got frustrated. |
DRI wont work until the AGP problem is sorted.
This... Quote: | did see in my research that the latest release of the drivers wasn't that good. Would the last version be any better? |
Looks like you have ati-drivers 8.40.4 this driver works fine for me but the subsequent ones dont.
And... Quote: | I should put that back and the other things from the Hardware 3D Acceleration Guide, but should I do them as Modules or the other option? |
I always do them as modules.
lastly Quote: | I even got fed up with trying to get it working and tried uninstalling it and using the free radeon driver. Sadly, it couldn't even find that driver. |
What do you mean by this, did you install XF86-video-ati but it doesn't work or the radeon kernel module does not load |

I should have posted the full message about DRI. I'll do that when I boot back into gentoo. You ask if I had installed any DM like KDE or Gnome. I had installed gnome a night or two ago. I let it run overnight.
I guess I'll do them as modules. I just have to remember to modify the autoloader file, right? Also One thing I noted about the patch is that they talk alot IOMMU support. I had to disable that so that I could choose to enable the /dev/agpgart choice under Device Drivers.
I didn't install XF86-video-ati. Is that the free radeon driver that won't support 3D rendering on newer cards like mine, which is mentioned in the handbook? If it is, that would explain me getting errors about xorg not being able to find it. |

Hi again the first problem is the agp one thats going to stop any driver working.
If you use open source the radeon driver that is the kernel module, xf86-video-ati is the xorg driver and you use the xorg opengl modules Code: | #eslect opengl set xorg-x11 |
If you use ATI binary package fglrx is the ATi binary kernel module, ati-drivers is the binary xorg driver and these use the ati opengl modules Code: | #eslect opengl set ati |
You may find that the kernel radeon driver will only work in 2D then you will have to search the forums or the wiki for r300 kernel drivers which may work with your card
It can sometimes be a pain getting it going but if you detail all the steps you take and add logs etc then it will make it easier for someone to help you. |

Thanks for your help.
I did solve my problem with getting a gui working. Unfortunately, I feel a little stupid. I had completely forgotten about the command gdm, typed it in, and the gui comes up. Well, at least I have that up now. Now I can post logs and errors without having to retype them.
I am going to still try and get the ati drivers working since I do want to do the 3D work. I did look through that patch, but I don't understand where it goes and I what I do with it. It's just a bunch of lines of code. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to paste it in somewhere or something. I even read through that entire bugzilla thread. It's time for more research. I do think I had tried that eslect opengl set ati command before.
If I get this to work eventually, I want to see if I can get Team Fortress 2 to work under WINE. That and get my two tv tuners working. But first, I'm going to use a corp. edition of ghost or look into a trial of True Image to make an image of my system. That's something I've been wanting to try for a while. |

I'm still a little unsure about that little patch. I'd like something more offical and with a little more info behind it. Since I got to my gui now, I can now post my logs. I figured I'd post these to see if I can get any other opinions.

So did you get the problem solved? I'm thinking of buy this card for my Dual Opteron running on a Tyan K8W S2875 motherboard. I'm have voltage problems with my present Sparkle Geforce 9700 GS. Apparently the Tyan AGP socket is very picky about what video card is used. This one is on there approved list.
