I get the following error when trying to [r]emerge courier-authlib:

However, when I search package.mask, courier-authlib is not listed...anyone know what is going on here?

Have you checked both:
/etc/portage/package.mask
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask

Thanks Jon, that was it, I didn't know there was a /etc/portage/package.mask. |

Great. The files in /etc/portage are for your local customizations - very useful.
