PostPosted: Fri Jan 11, 2008 2:13 am    Post subject: problems compiling alsa-driver [SOLVED] Reply with quote

hello, ive been trying desperately to get my sound to work. i have just spend a 7 hours or so trying to get sound to work with the alsa kernel module to no avail. it would say it was working fine, but output no actual sound. after following the alsa guide on gentoo.org i just went in circles getting no where. i have now decided to recompile my kernel to NOT have alsa support built in to be able to try the alsa-driver route. i then emerged alsa-driver and got the following error: http://rafb.net/p/nsQvMD50.html

i need sound on this thing before i can acknowledge it as a computer... please help

Carefully follow this article:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Compile_Kernel_with_ALSA

If it still doesn't work, in your next post please include the following information -
  1. Your sound card model
    To find sound card model:
    /usr/sbin/lspci | grep -i audio

  2. The output of aadebug
The "Notes" section at the end of that page explains how to run the script.

  3. And lastly
    Code:
    emerge --info

Also what commands were you using to test your sound card?

You have correctly setup your kernel to run your SiS966 card on SND_HDA_INTEL module.
And according to the kernel alsa mailing list, support was added over a year ago.
But it seems you still have to help the card detection:
configuring snd_hda_intel for ALSA

Fair enough. I'd also try:
Test sound with .wav:
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

the guide does not seem to work for me. i've found out that my motherboard is an ECS 671T-M with:
Audio Chipset Realtek ALC660
Audio Channels 6 Channels
Audio Ports 3 Ports
it also says it uses the SiS671 and the SiS968 chipsets.

EDIT: Solved, ran alsamixer, front was muted.

I'm glad it worked out :)

Could you please change your top post subject to something like:
"Realtek ALC660 sound using kernel drivers [SOLVED]"
...to help others browsing for the same problem?
