Why not just keep each game 'interpreter' in the genre category that they belong to?

because some do not have a genre :)
the genre is determined by the code it reads ...

There's just not enough to make this worthwhile yet, IMO.

Agreed ... however, i really dont like how 'simulation' is being used in what, to me at least, seems to be dual purpose ...
with some it's a 'real' simulation (lincity, searchandrescue) while with others it's merely a 'simulation' of playing a sports game/racing a car ...

And racing games could be construed as simulation, arcade or action. The view I took was that if it was a detailed game (torcs, racer), it went into the games-simulator category, whereas if it was a simpler fun game (tuxkart!) it went into games-arcade or games-action.

yeah this is def an issue ... but until we have a better way to describe where packages belong, i say we just go with how they've been placed (the simulation racing games are in games-sports while the simpler ones are in games-arcade ... again until we get more racing games then we'd just put em both in games-racing)

I just stuck them in games-misc.

the reason i like putting them in games-misc is it helps us cut down on new categories ... atm we're talking about making like 15+ new categories :)

I guess games-toys - toys is the equivalent happypenguin.org category - it'd be nice to maintain some kind of correlation with hp given that a lot of people will look first to hp when searching for games.

def a nice guideline to utilize

fortune is not an application worthy of app-misc.

Personally I'd put fortune in app-text.

I think that games-interpreter should be rolled into dev-games, since they are not games, but rather engines which require external data. You cannot say the same for things like Quake3, which requires external data, because it only works with one set of data and is packaged as a single entity.

I also think games-server needs to be something in the app- categories, since they are not games, but rather server applications.

As for racing games, I would think if they're cars/trucks/boats, etc then they should be under games-sports, if they're go-karts with fat pengiuns on them or penguins sliding down mountains on their bellies, they should be under games-arcade.

Honestly, I think there are way too many categories, especially given the fact that many could be in multiple categories.

I also think we need to *only* add actual games to the games- categories. Things like grustibus, for example, which is a front-end to mame should be under app-emulation rather than games-emulation. Things like pcgen don't really belong in games- but would be better suited for games-misc if we wanted to keep from putting it in app-misc.

If something is a requirement of a game, such as said before, it should be in the category with the game (unless it is a library or engine, which I think should be under dev-games). A good example is quake2-data and quake2-relnev.

I do agree that fortune doesn't belong in games- at all and probably belongs in app-text.

They are not game development tools. They are game engines that pertain to a particular genre.

They are games and it's up to the individual game engine to notify the user, when they try it, that extra data is needed and where it can be acquired from.

Well, the games-interpreter category is 100% non-intuitive and is therefore worthless in my eyes. I have no problem with the category itself so much as the naming. Naming should be simple and concise, yet get the "type" across.

Maybe game-engines?

I just wanted to say the same, games-engines sounds a lot more appropriate.

Just out of curiousity, can you give me an example?

An example: FreeSCI, supports mostly adventure games, but also Hoyle book of games 1 and 2, which are gambling games.

Another example: ScummVM, again mostly adventure games, but also Fatty Bears Fun pack which is a collection of board games.

Hmm I guess you have a point. So the media entries would actually go into the respective games-genre categories, and the engines all into games-engines.

That definitely sounds like the way to go to me... Should we have SpanKY change the page to reflect that?

ok ive taken the new proposal to -dev and -core ...

the only standing issue (afaik) is where to put the fortunes ...
i would like to get this whole system together and then come back to the fortune issue ... that means for now it'll sit in games-misc ...

it's not that i'm trying to do what i want, i would prefer to not hold back the rest of these changes for 1 pkg (fortune)

once this category system is fleshed out we can focus on this smaller detail ... in fact i've filed a bug about it so that it wont be lost :)
