Okay, I have an old orange "toilet seat" ibook. This beast features such things as a G3/300 processor, 164MB RAM, and a 10GB HD that came from a crushed-by-a-car Ti Book that makes the most horrible clicking sounds I've ever heard. It's not exactly an OSX powerhorse!
I'm thinking about installing gentoo PPC on it after success with my old beige G3. I have the following concerns:
1. Is there any kind of battery monitor applet or program for GNOME?
2. How hard is it to get X up and running?
3. How hard is it to get sound up and running?
4. Should I just stick with OSX (it runs it fairly well at max res of 1999 iBook 800x600) (ugh)
5. Will Starcraft run well in Mac-On-Linux? It runs like a champ in OSX.

1) not sure about gnome, but KDE has one and I imagine there would be a gnome equivalent.
2) X is simple, Xeasyconf is your friend 
3) Sound is supported by the kernel, so as long as you configure the right drivers you are set.
4) there is a _huge_ speed difference, try and find out 
5) That I have no idea, but since MOL doesn't run any accellerated video driver it's hard to say.

Thanks for the quick answers. I can always play starcraft on my other other mac. I'm going to try it out. How long do you think it'll be before gcc 3 is the default compiler for gentoo ppc? Here's a totally off-topic off-forum question: does "emerge --update system" eliminate the need to download a newer stage1 gentoo cd and reinstall (like if a new version of gentoo came out)?

for the system part, yes and no... if you rebootstrap and everything then yes.. but there is always still the possiblity of leaving some sorts of cruft behind. Best to start with a modern stage and go from there
As for GCC 3.x on ppc, not in the very near future. GCC 3.x as a whole has some serious problems with a great many of things and it is not totally there for ppc so its 2 strikes right now. Several core pkgs still don't work properly compiled with it...
In other words, don't hold your breath for gcc 3.x (then again I've been proven wrong before) |

| There is a pretty nice battery applet for gnome2, it show if you are on AC or battery and if you are charging your battery. |

I'm starting the install today. I hope USB speakers work (harmon/kardon hand me downs from a cube G4).

Crap! When the bootstrap process got to groff, it choked. I got this error:
!!! ERROR: The ebuild did not complete successfully.

!!! (no error message)
!!! emerge aborting on /usr/portage/sys-apps/groff/groff-1.17.2-r1.ebulid .
The configure script output right above this message is a bunch of "checking for ***... no" then a "configure: error: a working C++ compiler is required". I'm off to class so I'll probably just start over when I get back.
