OK, so thanks to "Nossie" I get passed the gettext issues during configure. Now, I run into this:
checking for Java support... find: /include: No such file or directory
configure: error: unable to find Java VM libraries
Now, I have the sun-jdk version emerged, and am running orion successfully with it. So, what is it exactly looking for?

It's looking specifically for java-config and the blackdown jdk; check my own php woes here:
