Hi all. 1st let me say I am still very new to gentoo, (I come from FC 1,3,4,7 and ubuntu background).

I have a compaq amarda m700 laptop with an ESS technologys ES 1978 Maestro 2e soundcard.

I know it works on windows. It also works when I run a dsl3.0 cd and knoppix cd (both of which run 2.4 kernels).

Any os I install ubuntu or fedora with 2.6 kernel, wont initilase the soundcard.

I am giving gentoo a try now. I have installed stage3 tarball freshly downloaded from the net a few days ago.
I built the kernel with genkernel all which I assume will put alsa into the kernel.
When I run alsaconf, it finds the card as ES 1978 and configures the es1968 driver.

alsactl returns
Quote:
alsactl :save_state: 1253: No soundcards found

If I try to run alsamixer,

Quote:
alsamixer :function snd_ctl_open failed for default :No such device.

I really hope someone can help me out as I have been impressed with gentoo sofar and would like to keep it on this laptop, but I really need sound and sofar windows is the only thing working...
(come on guys, dont let bill win. I know you can do it!!!)

This bit of dmesg could be a problem

Quote:
AC'97 0 does not respond - RESET
AC'97 0 access error (not audio or modem codec)
ES1968 (ESS Maestro): probe of 0000:00:08.0 failed with error -13

Any Ideas where to go from here?
