|
I've searched the web and found many posts about xf86-video-ati problems but not exactly my problem.
I tried the patch listed in gentoo bug 227821 with no success. I'm a first time poster so please let me know
if I've omitted important information.
I updated to kernel 2.6.25-r6 and xf86-video-ati no longer compiles. Prior to this I have been able
to build for my ATI tech RV 280 [Radeon 92000] (rev 01) video card with no problem. My make.conf
has VIDEO_CARDS="ati" (which has been for years), but I added "dri" to USE in this build (I tried
removing this and still have the same problem). I have [/quote]not changed anything in my xorg.conf file.
Here is my emerge --info:

This is probably not going to fix your problem, but just a note... I don't think there's an option "ati" in video cards. Look at the output of: Code: | # emerge -pv xorg-server | to see which variables can be used. I think you want "radeon" in there. That's what I have.
Also, you definitely want to keep "dri" in your use flags.
I doubt those will fix your problem... but
-Doug
P.S. Long shot but fun thing to do in the mean time... you could update your make.profile and rebuild your system with the newly stable gcc-4 That's always fun and good for your system!

Thanks for the suggestions. I put back "dri" into USE and I tried VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" but
still have the same problem. I am currently reading the documentation on gcc-4 and may do
that if no other ideas are suggested. Thanks again for the help. |

hmm... OK a more practical suggestion Why not try unmasking a newer version of xf86-video-ati?
Code: | # ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -av xf86-video-ati |
And if that compiles and works for you, you can just: Code: | # echo "=x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati-6.9.0" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords |
Let me know if that works...

I tried
# ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -av xf86-video-ati
and get the same compilation failure.
(BTW, I kept VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" for now, but am a little
surprised that "ati" was working for years and now would become
obsolete.) |

In the xf86-video-ati ebuild file there are these lines: Quote: | ewarn "If you have a mach64 or r128 video card, read this"
ewarn "The mach64 and r128 drivers moved to their own packages,"
ewarn "xf86-video-mach64 and xf86-video-r128. If these weren't installed"
ewarn "automatically by xorg-server and you have one of these cards,"
ewarn "check your VIDEO_CARDS settings."
|
I also remember seeing ati as an option not too long ago, but I've used the more specific radeon for quite a while. I imagine they were slowly splitting the generic ati into more specific ones, and now they're done. Anyways, having ati set in VIDEO_CARDS wouldn't have made a big difference to you because back when it was an option, it would have brought in xf86-video-ati, which builds the radeon driver, and once you had xf86-video-ati in your world file it would just keep getting updated naturally, but not necessarily be pulled in by xorg-server anymore.

I ran an "emerge -uD world' last night and now xf86-video-ati compiles!
The display manager fails on boot up, but I can successfully run startx
upon logging in.
Thanks for your suggestions, I wouldn't have gotten my computer back
to semi-functioning mode with out your help. _________________ CK Hayakawa |
