$ which java
which: no java in (/usr/kde/3.1/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.2:/usr/X11R6/bin:/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.1.01/bin:/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.1.01/jre/bin:/usr/qt/3/bin:/usr/kde/3.1/bin)
the java executable is in sun-jdk-1.4.1.01/bin which is in the path. If I cd there and run it, it works fine.
What is going on here? |

Assuming you're using bash, try doing a 'hash -r' and then 'which java' again? |

Yea, it lists it with a whole bunch of other things as "permission denied" |
