I know some of you would say it's not a big deal, every thing is documented already! Yes I admint but to find the right information you have to read at more than one place. So here is how I did it:
- Download the patched USB printer driver for alowing the printer to
work using USB:
http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/download/experimental/linux-usb/
(I download printer-2.4.c for a 2.4 linux kernel!)
and replace 'printer.c' from the kernel source with the downloaded one.
- Recompile the kernel with support for USB and usb printer andusbdevfs !!!
- install the new kernel (if needed) and modules and reboot (if needed!)
and make sure to load the nessecary modules:
modprobe printer (usb printer driver)
- poweron your printer and check that the printer is seen by the system
using usbview or just looking in /proc/usb ...
- download the CVS version of the 'hpoj' driver (ref to http://hpoj.sourceforge.net/download.shtml for more info)
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.hpoj.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/hpoj login (just press ENTER for a password)
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.hpoj.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/hpoj co hpoj
- Compile the hpoj driver:
make && make install
- Setup the printer driver:
/etc/init.d/ptal* setup (follow the printed guidelines!)
- check that the communication is working:
/usr/local/bin/ptal-devid [devname]
This is it for the driver setup now rest only to configure the printer spooler.
For cups it is simply needed to use the URI using format:
"ptal:/dev/ptal-printd/<check the name yourself>".
As backend driver it is best to use hpijs which has e proper ebuild:
emerge hpijs. |

It actually WAS(day and a half) a big fscking ordeal. Thanks for your consolidation post. I'm going to reference/link your post when I write on my own mobo/usb/print setup. Bill (ps - if this doesn't look too good, it's because this is my first post). |
