Hi all. I've had this little mini-itx VIA CN400 SP for a while. I've had a lot of trouble with it (Unichrome woes and all that) and I cant for the life of me figure out why. Problem seems to be something to do largely with video. Playing back movies sometimes works and all is well. But, most of the time it crashes. a restart and playing the same video again... causes another crash within 5 minutes. A third restart and playback usually works but not always!

At first I thought it was a DMA issue. I patched the BIOS with the VIA-ARENA Bios for this particular board. sadly that doesnt seem to have worked that well. I suppose it could be an MPlayer / Xorg / Openchrome issue but I cant tell. /var/log/messages, /var/log/syslog and /var/log/Xorg.log dont give me any handy info at the time of the crash. Im debating rebuilding mplayer with the debug option and tail -f the mplayer log if that'd help?

Here is the relevant stuff:

Cant think of anything else. I suspect the DMA stuff could be a seperate issue as this machine has died from large disk transfers as well but largely it seems to be playback of video. Anyone have any thoughts as to a really REALLY good way of getting more information out of the system at just before crash time?

Cheers

The first question that comes to mind for non-reproducible crashes is whether your system is overheating or experiencing some other form of hardware failure. If you ssh into the box before you trigger the crash, does your ssh session hang when the crash occurs? If so, this would indicate that the system is in a very bad state. If ssh continues to work, it is probable that only the console is hung.

Its definitely the 'bad state'. I thought memory failure might be it but memtest86 doesnt seem to help very much.Im wondering if perhaps it is heat. The system does indeed get hot but it again,it will stay on for ages doing other processor intensive tasks such as bittorrent and what not but it seems related to the video. Again, cant totally rule out hardware I guess.

Memory failure does not usually manifest in this way. If you can arrange to be on a text console at the moment of failure, you might be blessed with kernel panic output.

I found on my Mini-ITX PD10000 that having multi cpu support in my kernel caused it to lock up when compling stuff

thanks for the tips. Im guessing /var/log/syslog is the one to check. I generally try to keep one open on my desktop. I shall make sure I do so from now on and see if it works. Cheers.

Another crash... again with playback from a DVD. It always seems to revolve around playback of video it would seem. Nothing on the log file I had open. Just a total hard lock and screen freeze. Nothing on X moves at all and I cant log in remotely. Surely there must be a way to log somekind of error? Perhaps -debug on Xine might produce something?

The most likely culprit is the unichrome xorg drivers. They are notoriously bad. What video output are you using in xine/mplayer/whatever when you experience the locks? If you're using opengl or xv then try using basic xorg-x11 output (yes, I know it's slow). If you don't get any locks, then I'd say the issue is definitely related to the xorg video driver.

edit: I realize this doesn't really fix your problem, but at least it could help pinpoint what the issue is. Hopefully we can work from there.

On Xine it was Auto. I've tried XV and that locks. Which would you consider the "basic" XORG one to be? Will try them all and see. I'd forgotten about that. Im using the OpenChrome drivers at the moment - RAW Crashes, XVMC gives a SIGSEGV error in Xine

the basic xorg one is called xshm (in xine) or x11 (in mplayer). That's the slow one that will (should, at least) work without any working hardware acceleration.

Ah yes. Tried that one. crashed as well.

at the moment, it would seem that the VESA driver with XV is working ok. very slow DVD playback. AVIs play fine but cant be stretched to fit the screen. It would seem, therefore, that its the OpenChrome driver playing up I suspect though why XHSM with OpenChrome would crash as well I have no idea. Still, getting to the bottom of it i think :)

Cheers
