The .configs for 2.6.25.20 and 2.6.26.8 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors have just been uploaded to the site.
Also, I am going to do another redo on the .configs. I'm finding far too many inconsistencies for my own liking. I'm thinking this should take a day or three. I'm going to take it slow so the next time I update, it will be because of new settings I'm trying out, not fixing my own oopses.

Good work Pappy! I have compiled a 2.6.25-gentoo-r8 kernel yesterday on a Sabayon box I am trying to re-gentooise. Kernel size went down from 4.6M to 2.7M, and no more initrd.
One question. The old setup used UUIDs in the boot parameters for Grub. Turned out the new kernel don't recognised those. Easily solved by simply deleting the UUID setup and changing to the actual hd names (i.e root=/dev/hda3 instead of root=UUID=xxxxxxxxxxxxx). Just for future reference, does those UUID settings require a switch the kernel config, or is it something in the initramfs that enables that?

Unfortunately, I can't answer that question.
I have always found initrd to be a bit too ham-handed for my tastes. The only time I used initrd was when I was running Slcakware-12, and in order to get hal/dbus to work you had to set up initrd and SMP support. Since Gentoo doesn't require such gymnastics, I have foregone the need for initrd.

I have updated the .configs yet again. I worked on them side by side to help insure better settings consistency.
The intel microcode setting under Processor type and settings was turned off since it tended to bias toward intel chips. NFS support was increased by turning on both server and NFS version 4 support. The performance governor under CPU frequency scaling was set to default, and all other governors, as well as CPUfreq debugging was turned off. Hardware monitoring was turned on by default, as was RTC support and SATA support.
The new .configs are uploaded and ready to go. Enjoy!

i found if you get krnel panic after 2.6.27 r1 r2 r3 compile and on reboot the root = /dev/hdax should be changed to /dev/sdax
and correspondingly change the fstab lines also.
now my 2.6.27-r3 kernel works well with my desktop and laptop.
ofcourse i used my own make xconfig to make the .config.

93nt00r0ck5, thanks for the message. I am surprised myself that no one had thought of it before. I am quite glad it was my idea. It makes up for some of the crap I endured with some of the folks that hung out at the linuxquestions Slackware forum.
When you give your new kernel a try, you will have more seeds to choose from. I just uploaded .configs for 2.6.26-gentoo-r3, 2.6.27-gentoo-r4, and 2.6.27.7 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!
Pandoor, yes, my seeds are set with libata support enabled, and that makes hd(x) sd(x). You can disable that and enable the ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support, but that option is seemingly going away more quickly than slowly. The new Gentoo install media favor the libata drivers. That's a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

No. I figure that setting a random configuration is probably as bad as not taking care to make sure you enable the proper hardware, or other settings. Having such a thing makes me wonder whose idea it was to put it in there...and why. Since I can't read their minds, I have to think it's a weird sort of geek comedy.

What a strange thing to do!? With a complex thing like a .config, why on earth would they think they would learn anything useful? Would take almost as long to get a useful .config this way as getting a Shakespeare play out of a flock of monkeys playing with typewriters.

I updated the 2.6.27-gentoo through 2.6.27-gentoo-r4 kernels because of numerous errors. I noticed these errors when using one of my seeds to set up a new kernel for my Toshiba laptop.
It's a good thing I don't claim perfection.

No, not at all. nvram refers to the CMOS memory (BIOS settings, RTC, etc) in a PC. And while it's not really important, it's also nothing bad, either. The device /dev/nvram shows up, and contains data.
I have set it off in the 2.6.27.8 seeds. I am going to compile that into a kernel for this machine, and see if it causes any problems, or solves any. Depending on how that turns out, it might get turned off, since it would go against my philosophy of having unneeded things in the kernel.
I just love experimentation!
