reboot/shutdown from within gnome 2

i want to be able to click on "actions -> log out " then click shutdown or restart and have it actually do that. right now all it does is kick me back to the logon screen. how can i fix this?

I'd take a guess that it works fine if you are logged in as root. If I am right then you need to find a fix you are comfortable with to allow your users to use the shutdown and reboot commands. Personally I just chmod'ed mine. You may want to make a group and add users to it as you see fit. Like I said find a solution you are comfotable with (if it works for root already that is.)

If root has the same problem then you have something else on your hands and I have no suggestions--now at least.

Does anyone have any information on how to run shutdown and reboot using consolehelper? I have no experience with consolehelper but it appears to be the most secure way of giving users access to such commands.

Check this other thread out, I believe this is the "proper way" of handling this (as opposed to what I tried earlier.) This seems so much more elegant!
