I finally got my Linksys wusb11 ver 2.8 wireless adapter to work. Here's a quick rundown:

I tried the portage ebuild at76c503a, all versions, they didnt compile.

Then I tried to compile the berlios drivers from source:

http://developer.berlios.de/projects/at76c503a/

These didnt compile either!

Then I stumbled upon this patch on the gentoo bug reports:

https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=169738

Saved it, then used `patch' to patch the at76_usb.c file:

Code:

patch at76_usb.c at76_usb.patch

It compiled!
But it still didnt work, I had to download the firmware from http://developer.berlios.de/projects/at76c503a/. Once I got that I copied all the .bin files to /lib/firmware.

I did
Code:

insmod at76_usb.ko

and I was able to successfully bring up wlan1 and connect.

Hope this helps anyone having trouble with this adapter! Should I post this on the wiki? After writing it up a little better, of course.... ;)

This device seems to be identical with Netgear's MA101. Just mentioning it in case someone searches for that thing.

Short rant: The MA101 was such a pain to install back when 2.6.3 was fresh(that's around 2004). Took me hours to get it running and the only way to make it work on startup was to hard-code the WEP key into the driver. I'm glad I gave it away two years ago. Interestingly I still receive mails from the at76c503a-user mailing list, so people are still using it, even though at76_usb is now in the kernel.

Which brings up this question: Why haven't you tried the kernel drivers, mcfiredrill?

Hmm...havn't thought about this much since I got it working...but I check my config and it appears I did compile the kernel drivers...

What really worked for me was the patch, because the ebuild from portage failed, and I could apply the patch myself if I compiled it myself.

I suppose the proper thing to do would be either try compiling the kernel drivers again(would the patch be in there? I don't see why not, since it works...but what do I know about kernel dev. ? ;) ) or try to integrate the patch into the ebuild....

Make any sense???

mcfiredrill,

I don't know if it makes any sense, since I don't have a device which utilizes this driver anymore. You might want to give the kernel drivers a chance, but since you already found a solution which works for you I don't see much reason to invest time into this. There's also no guarantee that the kernel driver will work...
